Full Job Description
The New York City Law Department is seeking applications for the position of Division Chief for its Tax and Bankruptcy Litigation Division. The Tax and Bankruptcy Litigation Division comprises four distinct practice areas: Tax Certiorari, Condemnation, Income and Excise Taxation, and Bankruptcy. The Division's attorneys and legal support professionals work on a wide range of significant matters including: defending against challenges to assessed real property values for property tax purposes to ensure the City's continued fiscal health; acquiring property by eminent domain or negotiated acquisition to facilitate public projects and infrastructure; handling real estate closings for the City and various title questions; litigating issues regarding income and excise tax matters before administrative tribunals and other courts; and protecting the City's interests in bankruptcy court. Moreover, the Division handles its own appeals and manages an extremely robust appellate practice in both state and federal court. The Division Chief leads the teams and oversees the work of the Division, which consists of approximately 30 attorneys and 25 support professionals. The Division Chief also advises agencies and officials on a wide variety of legal and policy matters related to tax, bankruptcy, and land use matters. ASSISTANT CORPORATION COUNSEL - 3011B The Tax and Bankruptcy Division is dedicated to providing outstanding legal advocacy on behalf of the City. Accordingly, applicants must be admitted to the New York State Bar and have an extensive background in handling Article 78 proceedings and plenary actions. The candidate must also be highly proficient in brief writing and oral argument. A solid understanding of the matters handled by the division is preferred, as is a commitment to public service. Experience in successfully leading a team of attorneys and legal support professionals handling challenging matters is required, as is experience advising clients and negotiating settlements. Applicants should be creative problem-solvers who seek to optimize how cases are managed, and should be able to demonstrate dedication to growing and developing the skills of the Division. The role is particularly suited for those seeking meaningful public service, particularly while supervising a large team of attorneys in state and federal practice on high profile matters.
