Project/Unit Description The Health Emerging & Advanced Technologies (HEAT) Division is dedicated to improving individual and population health through advances in the capture, analysis, and standards-based, interoperable communication of health data. Our goals are 1) to advance foundational technologies in health data analytics; 2) to promote interoperability and open-source platforms in health; 3) to support healthcare partners in maximizing the value of their data resources; and 4) to foster scalable and secure health research locally and globally.
The HEAT Division works with a broad range of sponsors including federal and state agencies, health systems, industry, academia, and foundation partners. Our two main branches include 1. the Health Analytics and Phenotyping Branch, specializing in data analytics, artificial intelligence, electronic health records and claims data, cost analytics, public health data, and training; and 2. the Health Interoperability and Standards Branch which focuses on developing infrastructure for connecting data across health computing systems including electronic health records, public health, research, and other repositories, as well as implementing AI infrastructure for research and public health.
Job Purpose The Division Chief Scientist helps direct and oversees the division's internal research and development (IRAD) program. The division chief scientist ensures IRAD activities will maintain and grow the division's competitive position by: formulating and executing key elements of the division's strategy, working closely with researchers and unit leads in the alignment of IRAD with other investments and awards, developing collaborations across other labs (Division Chief Scientists in particular), representing the division's opportunities and challenges through reporting to the Lab Chief Scientist, and connecting with the broader research and sponsor community.
Key Responsibilities The HEAT Chief Scientist represents the division locally, nationally, and internationally to external collaborators and sponsors. The Chief Scientist has primary responsibility for developing and executing strategic and tactical plans to promote and enhance HEAT's technical capabilities and reputation. In addition to performing sponsored research, the Chief Scientist also manages HEAT's Independent Research and Development (IRAD) portfolio, and mentors HEAT personnel in research domains. Specific position responsibilities include:
- Support the HEAT Division Chief and lab leadership in the formation of division direction and strategy, sponsor-engagement opportunities, and proposal strategy/review/bid decisions.
- Formulate strategic direction and plans for HEAT's IRAD investments as well as develop Strategic Initiative concepts with potential for high impact to GTRI and the nation
- Support the HEAT Division Chief with financial and technical oversight of the HEAT IRAD portfolio, to include serving as a liaison to the ICL Chief Scientist
- Mentor HEAT researchers to promote professional advancement, business development, and technical / scientific growth
- Develop and sustain external and internal strategic relationships with peer leaders across the technical community, including Georgia Tech and our collaborating institutions
As Medical Scientist, the individual serves as a lead health technology domain expert on projects and contributes to developing technical solutions to complex health related problems.The individual will develop projects, drive business development activities, disseminate research, and oversee research teams. Contributes substantially to the health informatics technical and domain capabilities of the division.
Required Minimum Qualifications - 4+ years of Health Informatics research including publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Demonstrated history of successful technical execution of complex projects
- Excellent communication skills to mediate between multiple stakeholders and converge on optimal solution
Preferred Qualifications - Knowledge of health data standards
- Scientific training with a doctoral (PhD) degree OR medical training with a doctoral degree (MD, DMD)
- Knowledge of health interoperability
- Experience with clinical trial recruitment technologies
- Experience with AI as applied to healthcare
