Job Description / Essential Elements:

MANAGEMENT POSITION

TITLE: DIRECTOR, SPECIAL EDUCATION

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Credential
1. California Credential authorizing instruction in a designated special education setting
2. California Administrative Services Credential

B. Experience
1. Experience in both regular and special education settings. Knowledge of state and federal special education regulations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Act as a District Representative to the North Coastal Consortium for Special Education.
B. Monitor procedural safeguards and recommend procedural changes required.
C. Supervise the adherence to federal and state laws and regulations.
D. Keep records and collect data as required by state and federal regulations.
E. Supervise the implementation of student I.E.P.'s in each special education class or program.
F. Assist staff in:
1. Administering a wide variety of diagnostic assessments in the areas of academic achievement, gross and fine motor functioning, visual and auditory perception, learning modalities, and others;
2. Utilizing the results in developing written individualized instruction plans;
3. Prescribing and carrying out appropriate behavior modification techniques;
4. Coordinating individualized education programs with the student's regular program;
5. Observing student behavior in the regular and special classrooms and consulting with teachers regarding impressions and suggestions;
6. Reviewing student progress and re-evaluating periodically with students, parents, and regular teachers;
7. Providing consultation relating to specialized instruction, management, and guidance to aides, regular teachers, and parents.
G. Develop and arrange in-service training programs for teachers and aides.
H. Assist in providing coordination of services for students.
I. Attend meetings and conferences designed to improve the quality of the special education program.
J. Evaluate designated special education staff.
K. Supervise the operations of regional programs assigned to the San Marcos Unified School District.
L. Develop and implement department budgets.

B. Evaluated by Assistant
