Director, Retail Fulfillment Center Operations

Summary

The Director of Retail Fulfillment Center Operations is responsible for leading multi-site fulfillment and distribution operations with a focus on operational excellence, inventory accuracy, customer satisfaction, and continuous improvement. This leader oversees warehouse management, order fulfillment, logistics, and workforce development while driving efficiency, scalability, and cost-effective operations. The role partners closely with cross-functional leaders to support business growth, improve service levels, and implement innovative solutions across the fulfillment network.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute fulfillment center strategies that align with business objectives and support long-term growth.
  • Lead multi-site distribution and fulfillment operations, ensuring consistent performance, efficiency, and service excellence.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure operational effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Oversee receiving, warehousing, inventory management, order processing, and shipping operations.
  • Drive productivity improvements through workflow optimization, labor planning, process enhancements, and capacity utilization strategies.
  • Ensure inventory accuracy through disciplined inventory control, cycle counting, and auditing processes.
  • Develop and execute peak season readiness plans, including capacity planning and contingency strategies.
  • Lead, coach, and develop fulfillment center leaders and operational teams to build a high-performance culture.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, employee engagement, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage operating budgets and identify opportunities to improve productivity while controlling costs.
  • Analyze operational and financial performance metrics and provide recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, company policies, and operational standards.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives utilizing Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or other process improvement methodologies.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with vendors, carriers, and third-party logistics providers to optimize performance and cost.
  • Evaluate and implement warehouse management systems (WMS), automation technologies, and process improvements to increase efficiency and scalability.
  • Utilize data analytics and reporting tools to support decision-making and operational performance improvements.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in fulfillment and distribution operations.


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related field required.
  • Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA), Supply Chain Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Lean Six Sigma certification preferred.


Experience

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in warehouse, distribution, or fulfillment center operations.
  • 5+ years of experience leading large-scale, multi-site distribution or fulfillment center networks.
  • Proven success managing high-volume operations and delivering measurable improvements in productivity, quality, and customer service.
  • Experience managing large teams in fast-paced distribution, logistics, retail, or e-commerce environments.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience managing operating budgets and P&L performance.
  • Experience implementing warehouse management systems (WMS), automation technologies, and operational process improvements.
  • Demonstrated success leading change management and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Knowledge of inventory management, transportation, logistics, labor planning, and fulfillment best practices.
  • Strong leadership, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in retail, omnichannel, or e-commerce fulfillment environments preferred.
  • Experience with automation, robotics, advanced material handling systems, or high-growth distribution networks preferred.
  • Ability to travel as needed to support multiple fulfillment center locations.
