Primary Purpose: Provide leadership and strategic direction for district transportation operations and vehicle maintenance to ensure safe, reliable, efficient, and compliant services. Direct transportation operations, routing and scheduling, fleet maintenance, safety and regulatory compliance, budgeting, and personnel management. Develop and implement departmental procedures and operational practices while collaborating with district leadership, campuses, families, and other stakeholders to support district transportation needs.
Qualifications: Education and Certification - Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in transportation, business administration, logistics, or a related field
- Transportation director certification (preferred)
- Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with passenger (P), school bus (S), and air brake endorsements
- Texas School Bus Driver Certification
- Must maintain compliance with all Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements governing commercial driver's license issuance and renewal
- Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiner's Certificate, or the ability to obtain and maintain certification
- Ability to meet required DOT physical examination and drug and alcohol testing requirements
Experience - Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in student transportation operations, fleet management, or a related field
- Three (3) years of supervisory or management experience
- Experience operating a school bus (preferred)

Key Responsibilities: Transportation Operations and Routing - Develop and enforce transportation procedures and administrative regulations related to school bus safety, student discipline, and department operations.
- Establish regular and special education routes, schedules, and stops to support student safety, efficient scheduling, appropriate student loads, and cost-effective operations through use of the district's transportation management and GPS/student tracking systems.
- Serve as a liaison with district personnel, students, parents, and outside organizations to coordinate transportation activities and programs and resolve issues or conflicts.
- Advise the Superintendent and Executive Director of Operations regarding road and surface conditions during inclement weather or other operational concerns.
Budget, Purchasing, and Resource Management - Develop and prepare the annual preliminary budget for the Transportation Department; analyze and review budgetary and financial data; control and authorize expenditures within established limits; estimate costs and approve billings.
- Advise the Executive Director of Operations on the purchase of supplies, equipment/parts, fuel, and bus/equipment replacement.
- Provide technical expertise, information, and recommendations to the Executive Director of Operations regarding fiscal policies, procedures, and programs related to transportation operations.
Compliance, Reporting, and Driver Requirements - Compile and maintain required Denton ISD and Texas Education Agency (TEA) Transportation Reports.
- Maintain personnel records verifying that all drivers hold valid driver's licenses and all required TEA endorsements, certifications, medical qualifications and other required credentials.
- Maintain the driver handbook and related procedures to support compliance with applicable federal, state, and district policies.
- Administer the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing program.
Personnel Leadership and Training - Manage recruitment, hiring, safety, training, assignment, and evaluation processes for transportation staff and bus drivers.
- Maintain current knowledge of transportation regulations, legal requirements; conduct and facilitate meetings and in-service training as needed.
Fleet, Maintenance, and Facilities - Direct and manage school bus fleet maintenance operations.
- Manage alternative fuel program and ensure compliance with applicable waste, emissions and reporting requirements.
- Ensure transportation facilities, vehicles, and fleet equipment are maintained in safe and good operating condition.
Student Safety and Emergency Response - Oversee the department's student management and transportation safety program.
- Oversee investigation of accidents involving buses or other district vehicles as needed.
Bus Operation - Operate a school bus as needed to support transportation services.
- Perform pre- and post-trip inspections and ensure the vehicle is operated safely in compliance with all applicable laws and district policies.

Supervisory Responsibilities: - Supervise, evaluate, and recommend employment actions for assigned transportation personnel, including hiring, placement, reassignment, discipline, and termination.
