Reporting to theVice President, Administration, the Director of Safety & Security (DSS) isthe Company's senior leader responsible for safety, security, regulatorycompliance, emergency preparedness, enterprise risk management, and continuousimprovement of the Safety Management System (SMS). The successful candidatealso fulfills the statutory role of Designated Person Ashore (DPA), maintainingdirect access to the Chief Executive Officer on all matters affecting safety,security, environmental protection, and regulatory compliance.
This is anexceptional opportunity to shape safety culture, strengthen regulatorycompliance, and provide strategic leadership across both Northumberland FerriesLimited and Bay Ferries Limited.
KeyResponsibilities
SafetyManagement System Leadership & Operational Safety
• Leadand continuously improve the Company's Safety Management System (SMS) and JustCulture.
• Ensurecompliance with the ISM Code, Canada Shipping Act, Marine Safety ManagementSystem Regulations, Canada Labour Code, and other applicable regulations.
• Leadincident investigations, audits, inspections, Master's Reviews, and correctiveaction programs.
• Monitorsafety performance, trends, and continuous improvement initiatives acrossvessels, terminals, and shore operations.
Security,Regulatory Compliance & Cybersecurity
• Leadthe Company's marine and facility security programs.
• MaintainVessel and Facility Security Plans.
• Liaisewith Transport Canada, Canadian Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, ClassificationSocieties, and other regulators.
• Supportcybersecurity governance and operational technology risk management.
DesignatedPerson Ashore (DPA)
• Serveas the primary safety link between shipboard personnel and senior leadership.
• Provideindependent oversight of operational safety performance.
• Ensurevessels and operational locations receive appropriate shore-side support andresources.
Governance,Reporting & Leadership
• Developsafety objectives, KPIs, budgets, and annual strategic plans.
• Chairor support safety and security committees.
• Provideexecutive reporting, risk assessments, and trend analysis.
• Coachand mentor leaders while representing the Company with regulators and industrystakeholders.
Qualifications
Education& Experience
• Degreein Engineering, Business Administration, Occupational Health & Safety,Marine Transportation, or related discipline; or equivalent marinecertification (Master Mariner or Chief Engineer).
• Minimum10 years of progressive leadership experience.
• Extensiveknowledge of the ISM Code, DPA responsibilities, SOLAS, STCW, MarineTransportation Security Regulations, and related regulatory frameworks.
• Experienceleading audits, investigations, emergency management, and regulatoryengagement.
Knowledge& Skills
• Strongleadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
• Excellentanalytical, risk assessment, and problem-solving abilities.
• Knowledgeof maritime cybersecurity and operational technology risks.
• Abilityto lead cross-functional teams in a complex 24/7 operational environment.
