Job Summary

The Director of Safety and Risk Mitigation is a 12-month, full-time position within the Division of Student Life. The Director reports directly to the Dean of Student Life and is responsible for all aspects of the Safety and Security program at Union University. The Director of Safety, Security, and Risk Mitigation works closely with students, faculty, and staff to create an environment where all members of the University community feel safe and served.

Essential Job Duties

Safety and Security
  • Responsible for establishing both long range/immediate safety and security objectives and goals which are congruent with those mandated in the University Mission Statement and which meet local, state and federal requirements. The objectives and goals must incorporate a total program of safety and campus security, which provides reasonable protection to all members of the University community.
  • Ensure the University's Safety and Security Manual remains current and adequately meets all federal, state, and local standards.
  • Develop and manage an annual budget which must be adequate to meet the requirements of the department.
  • Responsible for selecting and supervising all full-time and part-time (including students) security employees hired by the University and approve and supervise personnel contracted from security services.
  • Develop job descriptions for each security position and conduct regular performance evaluations.
  • Implement an orientation and training program for all security employees.
  • Responsible for administering the University's traffic enforcement program to include the collection of fines and review of traffic appeals.
  • Collect and furnish criminal statistics and other reports required by both the federal Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act and the Tennessee College and University Act.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with the Jackson Police Department, Madison County Sheriff's Department, and the Jackson Fire Department.
  • Oversee and conduct investigations, when appropriate, of all reported criminal or other questionable offenses, which occur on the premises of the University. Prepare timely reports to the Vice President for Student Life (or his designee), or to outside agencies when necessary for use in judicial matters.
  • Supervise the University van policy and administering student van driving tests.
  • Assist with other responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of Student Life.

Risk Mitigation
  • Work closely with the Director of Facilities Management and the Director of Residence Life to correct and prevent issues pertaining to campus safety and security.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing educational programs designed to heighten crime awareness and promote safety among members of the campus community.
  • Monitor inclement weather conditions and provide the University community with advanced warning. Coordinate evacuations when necessary.
  • Implement and supervise fire safety inspections of all residence halls and University buildings.
  • Serve as the primary contact person, compliance officer and trainer for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Travel Security
  • Disseminate information to University travelers and relevant University administration through Crowning Shield Travel Risk Monitoring program about risks/warnings for travel to individual countries.
  • Provide travel risk consultation for faculty and staff.
  • Partner with the Office of University Ministries to provide travel oversight and education for students participating in Global Outreach Trips.

Required Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or a related area of study and a minimum of five years of experience in Safety and Security, Law Enforcement or a related field. Possessing the experience and a vision for leadership within the areas of education, training, safety and security are a must. An understanding of legal issues and best practices within higher education, specifically as they relate to safety and security, and crisis management is required.
This position also requires excellent written and oral communication skills, an attention to detail, an understanding of issues of confidentiality, and the ability to successfully complete multiple tasks simultaneously. Also required are strong computer skills, especially with the MS Office Suite of programs including Excel and Word.
