Full Job Description
The Director of Sustaining Engineering is responsible for leading the technical execution and operational excellence of products in high-volume production. This role ensures stable manufacturing, continuous yield improvement, cost optimization, and successful execution of sustaining activities across semiconductor product lines.

This leader owns resolution of production issues, drives systematic improvements, enables capacity expansion and test conversions, and ensures product reliability and quality throughout the production lifecycle. The role requires strong cross-functional leadership across Product Engineering, Test Engineering, Operations, Quality, Reliability, and OSAT partners to maintain uninterrupted supply and improve product performance at scale.

This position complements NPI execution by focusing on post-release product health, factory performance, and long-term manufacturability excellence.

Job Description

Production Support & Issue Resolution
  • Own end-to-end resolution of production issues across fab, assembly, and test
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for yield excursions, test escapes, and reliability issues
  • Drive structured problem-solving (8D, 5-Why) and enforce closed-loop corrective actions
  • Partner with Quality and Operations to manage customer returns and field reliability concerns

Yield Improvement & Cost Optimization
  • Drive continuous yield improvement through data analytics, parametric monitoring, and defect reduction
  • Lead cost reduction initiatives, including test time reduction, multisite optimization, and scrap reduction
  • Monitor product KPIs (yield, DPPM, test cost, cycle time) and drive corrective actions

Capacity Expansion & Manufacturing Readiness
  • Lead engineering support for factory and OSAT capacity expansion initiatives
  • Own qualification and release of additional manufacturing capacity (sites, lines, tools)
  • Ensure readiness for high-volume production, including alignment of test capability and manufacturing flow
  • Partner with Operations on demand/capacity balancing and risk mitigation

Test Strategy Execution in Production
  • Drive production test optimization, including test conversions across ATE platforms
  • Ensure correlation, stability, and scalability of test solutions in manufacturing
  • Support test coverage improvements, cost optimization, and hardware/software transitions
  • Partner with Test Engineering and Test Architecture teams for long-term platform strategy

Change Management & Product Lifecycle Support
  • Own execution of PCNs, ECOs, and manufacturing transfers
  • Ensure robust change control processes with minimal disruption to production
  • Support EOL and last-time-buy activities and long-term product sustainability planning

Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Lead global sustaining engineering teams across multiple sites
  • Act as primary interface between Product Engineering, Test, Quality, Reliability, and Operations
  • Drive alignment on priorities, issue escalation, and factory performance improvement
  • Build strong engagement with OSATs and internal manufacturing partners

Organization & Business Leadership
  • Own sustaining engineering roadmap, metrics, and performance tracking
  • Manage headcount, budget, and capital planning related to sustaining/test infrastructure
  • Build and develop a high-performing global team
