About the RoleThe Hospice Director of Nursing (DON) provides overall clinical leadership, supervision, and management of hospice nursing services. You will ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and accreditation standards. This is a leadership role with significant impact - guiding an interdisciplinary team, driving quality improvement, and championing compassionate care at every level.
What You'll DoClinical Leadership
- Direct and oversee all hospice clinical services
- Ensure delivery of compassionate, evidence-based end-of-life care
- Monitor patient care plans and clinical outcomes
- Lead and participate in interdisciplinary team (IDT) meetings
- Ensure timely completion of assessments, care plans, and clinical documentation
Staff Management
- Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and evaluate clinical staff
- Conduct performance reviews and competency assessments
- Maintain appropriate staffing levels to meet patient care needs
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and patient-focused team culture
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Medicare Conditions of Participation (CoPs), Texas regulations, and hospice standards
- Prepare for surveys and audits conducted by regulatory agencies
- Monitor documentation for accuracy and regulatory compliance
Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement (QAPI)
- Lead QAPI activities and track quality metrics
- Review incident reports, patient complaints, and adverse events
- Develop strategies to improve patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes
Operations & Leadership
- Collaborate with leadership on census growth and operational goals
- Assist with budgeting and resource management
- Participate in administrative on-call rotation and provide after-hours clinical guidance
What We're Looking ForEducation & Licensure
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (BSN preferred)
- Current Texas Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of hospice nursing experience required
- Minimum 2 years of leadership or management experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of Medicare hospice regulations and Conditions of Participation
- Experience with electronic medical records and hospice documentation systems
