Duties & Responsibilities

Under the direction and supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Director of Nursing, Special Projects plans and directs all aspects of the Nursing Excellence Program. The Nursing Excellence program includes all organizational designations of excellence related to nursing practice including, but not limited to, Beacon, PRISM Lantern, Surgical Safety and ANCC Programs including Pathway to Excellence and Magnet.

The Director of Nursing Special Projects has broad expertise in the development and delivery of nursing professional practice models and is responsible for hospital-wide efforts to develop, implement and enhance conceptual models that drive professional nursing practice at Bellevue Hospital.

In addition, the Director of Nursing, Special Projects provides leadership and oversight for all Nursing Excellence designations and is responsible for retaining recognition by assessing enterprise readiness, and ensuring improvement strategies meet program criteria. This includes overseeing the development and completion of the various designation

and re-designation applications, annual report submissions, as well as serving as site visit survey Lead and Bellevue's Nursing Excellence researcher.

The Director of Nursing, Special Projects provides leadership to program dedicated staff and is seen as an influential leader at Bellevue Hospital. This includes assisting leaders throughout the organization by ensuring all nurses are informed and regularly updated about Nursing Excellence and recognition program initiatives, developments and progress.

The successful candidate will:

• Fosters a professional environment of patient and family-centered care.
• Interprets impact of broad scope organizational change for staff and develops change strategies for successful implementation.
• Incorporates the system and hospital's vision, missions and values in goals and programs within Nursing Excellence.
• Oversees and strengthens shared governance structures, ensuring active staff nurse participation in councils, committees, and decision-making processes affecting practice, quality, and professional development.
• Develops and implements clinical outcome measures for quality improvement, cost and complication reduction, and the implementation of evidence-based medicine.
• Incorporates the use of evidence-based practice and appreciative enquiry into program development and improvement activities.
• Formulates objectives, goals and strategies collaboratively with other stakeholders; Prepares and delivers reports to operational leadership outlining progress toward meeting annual goals and objectives, to include performance related to clinical activity, quality, safety.
• Contributes to the success of the organization by providing leadership, direction and coordination for areas of responsibility.
• Continually assesses all services, identifies problems, utilizes data to analyze and propose innovative approaches for solutions.
• Maintain records related to services that are complete, accurate, available, and in compliance with all legal, regulatory, and policy requirements.
• Engages staff and other stakeholders in continuous improvement of systems and processes; manages resources for staff participation in improvement work activities.
• Ensures effective facilitation of improvement teams and development of leadership skills to ensure overall effectiveness of the meetings.
• Leads and supports nursing research initiatives. including facilitation of clinical inquiry, evidence-based practice projects, and dissemination of findings through presentations and publications
• Perform other duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; and,
2. A Master's Degree in Nursing Administration or an equivalent field, and a minimum of four years of high-level responsible experience in nursing administration, three years of which shall have been in a hospital; or,
3. A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.

Department Preferences

DNP or PhD preferred.

Board Certification preferred.
