Summary: The Director of Clinical Standards and Practice is a physician who supports the Medical Director by developing the medical policies, protocols, privileging processes, and clinical tools that support consistent, evidence-based care at Hunter Health Clinic (HHC). The role interprets Accountable Care Organization and other clinical findings and develops practical recommendations in collaboration with the Director of Clinical Quality Assurance. The position provides direct patient care and focused physician expertise while the Medical Director retains provider management, and the Director of Clinical Quality Assurance retains established organizational quality responsibilities.

Essential Functions:

Performs the essential functions of a Primary Care Physician providing direct patient care hours for a minimum of 20 hours in addition to the following leadership responsibilities:
  • Develops and coordinates the clinical structure of on-site medical student and family medicine resident rotations to support HHC's physician recruitment pipeline, including learning objectives, orientation, supervision requirements, preceptor resources, and learner evaluations. Partners with academic programs and the Medical Director to support preceptors, resolve rotation barriers, and provide a consistent, engaging learning experience that encourages future employment at HHC.
  • Develops, reviews, and maintains medical policies, procedures, standing orders, clinical protocols, and pathways using current evidence and applicable requirements; coordinates stakeholder review and submission through HHC's established approval process.
  • Develops clear clinical eligibility criteria, exclusions, documentation expectations, and escalation instructions for medical workflows; serves as physician authorizer only when formally designated.
  • Develops medical privileging processes with credentialing staff and designated leaders, including privilege categories, initial and renewal competency criteria, assessment tools, and processes for review of requested changes to privileges.
  • Provides physician recommendations regarding competence and requested medical privileges; final decisions remain with HHC's designated approval authority, and administrative credential verification remains with assigned staff.
  • Serves as the physician liaison for Accountable Care Organization; participates in relevant meetings, reviews clinical data and care gaps, and translates findings into practical medical recommendations for the Medical Director and care teams.
  • Works with the Director of Clinical Quality Assurance and relevant staff to clarify data definitions and investigate clinical findings; recommends interventions while using established quality monitoring and reporting systems.
  • Develops medical documentation guidance, clinical decision-support content, and standardized care processes in collaboration with operations, nursing, pharmacy, and other relevant teams.
  • Produces clinical onboarding materials and education for approved policies, protocols, and practice changes; provides focused consultation to providers on these materials.
  • Provides physician expertise for peer review, complex chart review, and questions involving medical standards of care; develops medical review criteria within HHC's established review process.
  • Supports clinical incident and risk reviews by interpreting medical care and recommending changes to clinical protocols or practice; promptly escalates urgent patient safety concerns to the Medical Director and appropriate quality or risk leader.
  • Completes assigned medical improvement projects and develops the clinical content of interventions; partners with the Director of Clinical Quality Assurance on measures, monitoring, and evaluation of effectiveness.
  • Provides assigned physician input, clinical evidence, and medical documents for HRSA, UDS, PCMH, and other quality or compliance projects led through existing organizational processes.
  • Maintains a current inventory and review schedule for assigned medical policies, protocols, and clinical tools; reports progress, unresolved issues, and resource needs to the Medical Director.
  • Coordinates implementation materials and recommendations with the Medical Director, who retains provider supervision, performance management, and accountability for adoption.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Clinical Quality Assurance, whose existing responsibilities for cross-service quality systems, compliance monitoring, risk trends, reporting, and assigned committees remain in place.
  • Exercises project coordination authority for assigned clinical work; refers personnel concerns and disciplinary matters to the Medical Director and Human Resources.
  • Travels between clinic sites as necessary and performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • A graduate of an accredited school of medicine is required.
  • Current license as a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) in the state of Kansas, while obtaining continuing education hours to maintain active licensure is required.
  • Board certification in family medicine or internal medicine is required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) is required, within 30 days of hire.
  • Current and unrestricted Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license is required.
  • Maintenance of credentialing and privileging with Hunter Health Clinic, any required or relevant hospitals or facilities, and third-party payors is required.
  • Ability to obtain malpractice insurance is required.
  • Experience developing clinical policies, protocols, competency or privileging criteria, and interpreting clinical performance data is preferred. Experience with population health, value-based care, Accountable Care Organization, or FQHC practice is preferred.
  • Bilingual abilities are preferred.
