Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is recruiting for a Director of Mathematics Instruction and Implementation to provide statewide leadership, content expertise, and strategic direction for mathematics education from pre-kindergarten through grade 12.

The position is responsible for advancing high-quality mathematics instruction across the Commonwealth by leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of coherent instructional systems aligned to Virginia's academic standards and evidence-based instructional practices.

The Director of Mathematics would be responsible for the following duties:

  • Ensuring expectations are clear, well communicated, and relate to the goals and objectives of the mathematics department and that staff receive frequent, constructive feedback, including interim evaluations as appropriate.
  • Lead implementation of mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) program.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders (representatives from business, higher education, school divisions, etc.) to ensure mathematics SOL are current, rigorous, and prepare students for enlistment, enrollment, or employment.
  • Develop statewide, regional, division, and school level professional learning experiences informed by student outcomes.
  • Support item development, standard setting, and other duties associated with mathematics state assessments.
  • Represent the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) in matters and projects involving mathematics at State Board of Education meetings and at state, regional, and national meetings as approved.
  • Provide thorough and timely assistance to customers that reflects current mathematics best practices and factual information.
  • Work in collaboration with the Deputy Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and in consultation with staff, develops plans, goals, and objectives for the Office of Mathematics, consistent with VDOE focus areas and functions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of evidence-based mathematics instruction, learning progressions, high-quality mathematics standards, and national research and trends that inform mathematics teaching and learning.
  • Expertise in advancing high-quality mathematics instruction through the evaluation, implementation, and continuous improvement of High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) and curriculum-based professional learning.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating and supporting the implementation of mathematics HQIM, including using implementation and student achievement data to evaluate impact, inform strategic decision-making, and differentiate supports.
  • Ability to develop and lead coherent instructional improvement strategies that align standards, instructional materials, professional learning, assessment, and technical assistance, applying principles of continuous improvement, change management, and implementation science.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional leadership practices and experience designing and facilitating high-quality professional learning that builds educator capacity and accelerates student learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead high-performing teams, engage diverse stakeholders, and communicate complex information effectively to inform policy, implementation, and continuous improvement.
  • Strong project, organizational, and fiscal management skills, including experience writing or managing state, federal, foundation, or other educational grants.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching mathematics and leading mathematics program improvement in a school, central office, state education agency, nonprofit, or federal agency; knowledge of instructional technology and emerging practices that support high-quality mathematics instruction.

Additional Considerations

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in mathematics, curriculum, or a related area, or equivalent combination of skills and experience; advanced degree preferred.
