Role: Director of Learning and Engagement

Reports to: Senior Director, Learning and Engagement

Program: 9008-Learning

Department: Learning and Engagement

Location: Arlington Administration - 2116 Arlington Ave., Suite 100, Los Angeles, CA 90018

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4:30pm

Setting: Not 100% onsite

Status: Full-time/Exempt/Management

Summary:

In collaboration with the Senior Director, Learning and Engagement, the Director, Learning and Engagement is responsible for building and nurturing a robust culture of continuous learning and engagement at The People Concern. This position shepherds the overarching strategy and supervises the implementation of the strategic plans for the Learning and Employee Engagement Departments. The Director, Learning and Engagement works collaboratively with the Human Resources Department, Development Department, and the Executive Leadership team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

General:
  • Owns the department strategy and its implementation to support the agency in providing all employees with the highest standard of learning and employee experience in the industry.
  • Oversees that continual improvement of the department.
  • Leads collaboration within the team and between the departments.
  • Supervises the Senior Manager, Learning and Engagement, who manages the department coordinators.
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the department, including planning, delegating, and appraising job results, and evaluating staff performance.
  • Leads continuous assessment and improvement of programs.

Learning -
In coordination with the Senior Director of Learning and Engagement:
  • Oversees the implementation of Learning Department strategy and programs including New Employee Orientation, People Leader Orientation, People Leader Academy, People Concern University, Relias, In the Know at People Co, Pro-ACT, LEEP, Leaders Growing, and Leadership Development Pods.
  • Champions a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Consults on learning and training experiences, held by other departments/leaders as assigned, e.g. Case Manager Apprenticeship Program.

Employee Engagement -
In coordination with the Senior Director of Learning and Engagement:
  • Oversees the implementation of the internal communications strategy including This Week at People Co, Engage, SharePoint, and huddles.
  • Consults on a range of employee experience initiatives, including policy standardization and intra-departmental workgroups.
  • Leads implementation of employee engagement events and initiatives, including People Co Con, Day in the Park, Town Hall by Call, Kudos, etc.


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training in organizational development, education, project management, and communications.
  • Valid CA Driver's license, reliable car, auto insurance, and an acceptable driving record, and willingness to drive to various sites for training and engagement throughout the year as needed.
  • Must have a passion for learning and creating a collaborative environment for staff engagement and continuous improvement.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and good understanding of how to champion it in the work of the departments.
  • Five (5) years' experience in the delivery of social services and/or non-profit management. Experience in direct homeless services and domestic violence.
  • Strong written communication skills with a keen eye for copyediting and application of the agency style guide.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including being able to be precise, thorough, and detail-oriented, with excellent time management skills.
  • Excellent facilitation and conflict resolution skills, with demonstrated ability and comfort in facilitating trainings and workshops across tiers of leadership, including: Executive Leadership, Board, and Senior Leadership.
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience supervising staff required including evidence of strengths-based supervision with staff from a range of diverse experiences and identities.
  • Must exhibit a high degree of professionalism, business judgment, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills with a desire to build effective partnerships to create positive impact on staff experience.
  • Skilled in public speaking with diverse audiences, in both intimate and large group settings.
  • Able to self-start, take initiative, work independently and achieve high standards to meet multiple deadlines, while also working effectively with others in a team-oriented environment
  • Strong experience with computer applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required, as well as platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and design programs such as Canva.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, creative problem-solving skills and ability to provide quantitative analysis.
  • Working knowledge of trauma-informed care principles, harm reduction models, and diversity, equity and inclusion strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Fluency in Spanish, written and oral, and ability to copyedit.


Work Environment:
  • Combination of field and office environment, hybrid optional. Required to be in person, on-site at minimum 2 days per week, and often more depending on events and other necessities.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, bend; occasionally lift or carry up to 35lbs.
  • On occasion walk or drive to different local sites
  • Will necessitate occasionally working in busy and loud environments.
  • Will be exposed to elements like cold, heat, dust, noise and odor.
  • May need to bend, stoop, twist, and sit throughout the day.
