Job Description
The Director of Housing and Residence Life serves as the chief administrator of Alabama State University's residential communities, providing leadership for housing operations, residence life, and residential education. The director ensures a safe, inclusive and supportive living environment that advances student success, engagement, and retention. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management ( or designee), the Director oversees residential facilities, staff, and programs and plays a key role in student safety, crisis response, conduct, and campus life.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and vision for all Housing and Residence Life programs, operations, and long-range planning aligned with the University's mission
  • Oversee residence halls, apartments and housing assignments while partnering with facilities and admissions to support high occupancy, quality service, and student onboarding
  • Lead residential education, living-learning communities, and engagement initiatives that promote academic success, leadership, and belonging
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate housing staff
  • Manage budgets, revenue, and expenditures to ensure financial sustainability
  • Lead crisis response, ensure compliance with University policies and laws, and coordinate with campus partners to address student safety and conduct
  • Establish learning outcomes, assess services, and use data to guide continuous improvement and retention.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field, a minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in university housing or residence life, demonstrated experience in staff supervision, crisis management, facilities coordination, budgeting, and residential programming, and must have strong leadership, communication, conflict management, and organizational skills required.
