Job Overview

The Director of Government & Board Relations oversees operations for the Montgomery Workforce Development Board (WDB) and the WorkSource Montgomery Board of Directors. The Director of Government & Board Relations is also responsible for cultivating and maintaining positive relationships with elected officials at the federal, state, and local levels. The individual provides analysis of legislation and legislative priorities for various lawmakers and groups relevant to WSM's mission.

Board Liaison Responsibilities & Duties
  • Work directly with Board Chairs and CEO to plan and execute board functions, e.g., meetings, events, policies, etc.
  • Provide support to committee Chairs in executing Committee charters, meeting schedules, and deliverables.
  • Provide leadership and project management for special projects pertaining to the WDB, e.g., Board & AJC Certification, Local & Regional Plans.
  • For the Workforce Development Board, serve as the liaison to the Montgomery County Executive's Office of Boards, Committees, and Commissions.
  • Monitor and report to Board Chairs and the CEO on compliance matters per local (e.g., Executive Orders), state, and federal (e.g., WIOA) guidelines.
  • Serve as the lead for board recruitment and onboarding activities.
  • Manage a departmental budget, including budgets for board operations and sponsorships.
  • Oversee the vetting and decision-making process for all WSM sponsorshiprequests.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Government Relations Responsibilities & Duties
  • Develop strong relationships and serve as the primary point of contact for the Montgomery County Council, Montgomery County Executive, and local elected officials.
  • Track and manage federal, state, and county-level legislation and regulatory updates pertaining to WSM's mission.
  • Support intake process for all constituent referrals and track service progress.
  • Advise WSM's CEO on relevant federal, state, and county developments.
  • Assist the CEO in the development and dissemination of correspondence to government officials.
  • Monitor trends and developments for the local, state, and national political climate, as well as legislative/regulatory developments affecting WSM.
  • As requested by the CEO, prepare written updates for the CEO, WSM Team, and WSM Newsletter.
  • As appropriate, coordinate meetings with local and state officials.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in government relations or a related field.
  • Experience in managing board of directors' activities.
  • A bachelor's degree in business, public administration, human services, or a related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and progressively responsible experience demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position will be considered.
