Director of Finance & Accounting

Location: Charlottesville, VA | On-site
Job Type: Direct Hire
Starting Salary: $120,000/year, with higher salary available depending on experience
About the Position

We are looking for a seasoned Director of Finance & Accounting to lead financial and accounting operations while providing financial guidance to senior leadership.

This hands-on leadership role oversees accounting processes, financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, compliance, and team development. The ideal candidate can move comfortably between high-level financial planning and the day-to-day management of accounting functions.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Accounting & Financial Operations
  • Oversee daily accounting and finance activities.
  • Manage general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, reconciliations, and month-end/year-end close.
  • Review financial records and ensure accounting information is accurate and timely.
  • Prepare financial statements, management reports, and financial analyses.
  • Establish and improve accounting procedures, reporting processes, and internal controls.
  • Identify financial risks and implement solutions that improve accuracy and efficiency.
Planning, Analysis & Cash Management
  • Lead the annual budgeting and financial forecasting process.
  • Monitor financial and business performance and provide actionable insights to leadership.
  • Manage cash flow, treasury activities, banking relationships, and cash forecasting.
  • Develop financial models, dashboards, KPIs, and executive-level reporting tools.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support business planning and major decisions.
  • Monitor working capital and identify opportunities to improve financial performance.
Compliance & Reporting
  • Coordinate financial audits and provide required records and documentation.
  • Oversee tax compliance and related filings.
  • Maintain accounting practices consistent with GAAP and standard accounting principles.
  • Help ensure compliance with applicable financial and regulatory requirements.
  • Strengthen financial controls and processes as the organization grows.
Team Leadership
  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance personnel.
  • Establish clear expectations and promote accountability.
  • Encourage process improvement and consistent financial practices.
  • Build strong working relationships with leadership and other departments.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
  • 5+ years of experience leading accounting or finance teams.
  • Strong background in:
    • Financial reporting
    • Month-end and year-end close
    • Budgeting and forecasting
    • Cash flow management
    • Internal controls
    • Financial analysis
  • Demonstrated success improving accounting processes and financial controls.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP and standard accounting practices.
  • Experience with audits, tax compliance, and banking relationships.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership abilities.
  • Ability to work on-site in Charlottesville, VA.


Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA, CMA, or other professional accounting certification.
  • Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience with CargoWise, QuickBooks, or similar accounting software.
  • Knowledge of treasury management and working capital.
  • Experience developing financial reports and presentations for executive leadership.
