Coastal Carolina University is currently accepting applications for the following position: Director of Environmental Health and Safety and University Fire Marshal in Environmental Health & Safety.

The Director of Environmental Health and Safety and University Fire Marshal provides strategic leadership, administration, and oversight for Coastal Carolina University's Environmental Health and Safety Department. The position directs University programs and services that protect the health and safety of students, employees, visitors, and the environment; reduce institutional risk; and support compliance with applicable laws, regulations, codes, standards, permits, and University policies. Serving as the University's designated Fire Marshal, the Director serves as the University's principal authority on fire code enforcement, life safety compliance, fire protection systems, and fire prevention. The position serves as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, public safety organizations, contractors, and other stakeholders on matters relating to environmental health, occupational safety, fire safety, and regulatory compliance. The Director develops and implements policies, programs, and operational strategies that promote a culture of safety, support the University's academic and operational mission, and foster a safe and healthy campus environment.

Required: Bachelor's degree and ten (10) years of progressively responsible professional experience in environmental health and safety, fire prevention, fire protection, code enforcement, occupational safety, or related programs, including at least five (5) years of supervisory or management experience. Must possess and maintain an International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I certification or equivalent fire code enforcement credential at the time of hire. Must obtain and maintain South Carolina Fire Marshal Certification within twelve (12) months of employment. Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license and maintain certifications in First Aid, CPR/AED.

Preferred: Master's degree in related discipline. Experience within higher education, government, healthcare, research institutions, or other complex organizations. Experience supervising multidisciplinary safety and compliance programs. Experience administering fire and life safety, environmental compliance, and occupational safety programs. Experience managing fire and life safety components of construction and capital projects. Experience planning and managing fire, life, and occupational safety elements for events.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Environmental Health and Safety Leadership and Administration: Provides strategic leadership and oversight for the University's Environmental Health and Safety Department, including environmental compliance, occupational safety, fire and life safety, and regulatory compliance programs. Directs departmental operations, budgets, personnel, policies, and initiatives that support a safe, healthy, and compliant campus environment.
• Fire Code Enforcement and Fire Safety Compliance: Serves as the University's designated Fire Marshal and administers the fire and life safety compliance program. Ensures compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and standards through inspections, audits, investigations, risk assessments, and corrective action planning. Leads the development and implementation of fire and life safety programs that protect the campus community.
• Construction Review and Capital Project Support: Provides technical oversight and code compliance review for construction, renovation, and occupancy projects. Collaborates with project stakeholders throughout project development and provides guidance on fire protection, life safety, and regulatory requirements.
• Event Management and Incident Response: Directs fire and life safety planning for major campus events and special activities. Supports emergency preparedness, serves in the University's Emergency Operations Center when activated, and provides leadership during fire-related incidents, emergencies, and operational disruptions.
• Community Risk Reduction and Continuous Improvement: Leads fire prevention, public education, safety awareness, and community risk reduction initiatives. Oversees regulatory reporting, performance metrics, and program assessments while identifying opportunities to enhance compliance, operational effectiveness, and organizational resilience.

Program Manager II (AH50/6112232/FTE-S01189P), full-time position with benefits. SC State Pay Grade: GEN12. Salary range: $81,192.00 (minimum) - $113,730.00 (midpoint). Normal work hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and Friday 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Must be flexible to meet the special scheduling needs of the university.

This position is designated as essential personnel and is required to respond to campus during emergencies, severe weather events, campus closures, and Emergency Operations Center activations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of fire prevention, fire protection systems, fire code enforcement, environmental compliance, occupational safety, laboratory safety, hazardous materials management, and emergency preparedness principles. Thorough knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, standards, and codes, including SC OSHA requirements, International Code Council codes, National Fire Protection Association standards, and environmental regulations. Demonstrated ability to interpret technical plans, specifications, engineering drawings, permits, regulations, and complex compliance requirements. Ability to manage multiple regulatory programs simultaneously while exercising sound professional judgment and discretion. Strong leadership, organizational, budget management, verbal communication, written communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, contractors, public safety agencies, regulators, and executive leadership. Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite.
