Job Summary: The University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a dynamic, collaborative, motivated and experienced leader to serve as the Director of Conflict of Interest (COI) and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR).
The COI and RCR Director will provide leadership for the COI Office and oversee policies and processes addressing federal requirements associated with financial conflicts of interest in research. Among other duties, this role is responsible for maintaining the university-wide Outside Activities Reporting (OAR) portal and leading the RCR program, including education, training, and guidance for faculty, staff, and students. The Director will employ a risk-based approach that reflects the mission, values and goals of the UW-Madison and ensures compliance with applicable university, state, and federal policies and regulations.
The COI and RCR Director will develop and maintain relationships internally (e.g., program staff, academic and administrative units) and externally (e.g., federal agencies, national networks, etc.) toward the continued success of faculty, research staff, and students. The Director is an ex officio member of several institutional committees and frequently coordinates with the Human Research Protection Program.
As assigned, the COI and RCR Director and members of the COI Office may support the Research Integrity Officer in handling allegations of research misconduct.
The COI and RCR Director role requires technical expertise, a commitment to continuous improvement and shared governance, and strong interpersonal and leadership skills to enable success in a decentralized, academic environment. The Director will be one of three direct reports to the inaugural Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Integrity and Compliance in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR). The Director will provide supportive supervision to program staff.
Key Job Responsibilities: - Develops operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives.
- Serves as the unit liaison to institutional stakeholder groups providing organizational information and represents the interests of the unit
- Directs strategic planning initiatives and creates unit objectives and goals to ensure compliance with established rules and regulations
- Develops and audits the unit budget and compliance reports in accordance with established rules and regulations
- Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
Department: Office of Research Integrity and Compliance, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.
Compensation: The minimum annual salary for this position is $155,000 depending on qualifications.

Required Qualifications: - Five or more years of experience administering research-related administration and/or compliance activities within a large complex organization.
- Three or more years of program management experience within a large complex organization.
- Understanding of US federal conflict of interest and responsible conduct of research policies and regulations.
- Superior oral and written communications skills.
- Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment across organizational units at all organizational levels.
Preferred Qualifications: - Demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate professional and administrative staff strongly preferred.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to develop, assess, and synthesize information from a wide variety of sources to inform sound policy recommendations.
- Experience in institutional compliance, administrative, and/or leadership at a large, public R1 university.
- Demonstrated growth mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement that advances organizational values and mission.
- Demonstrated experience in policy analysis, development, and implementation.
Education: Bachelor's degree required.
