Job Duties

We are hiring a Director of Cloud Engineering. This position is responsible for defining and executing the organization's cloud strategy while evolving the cloud platform to meet the needs of business stakeholders, internal development, and data teams. This role oversees the design, implementation, and optimization of secure, scalable, and cost-efficient cloud environments and champions developer experience through automation, self-service, and intuitive tooling.

Combining deep technical expertise with strategic vision and leadership, the Director drives cloud transformation initiatives, fosters operational excellence, and partners across the enterprise to enable digital modernization and innovation.

In this position, you will:

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive cloud strategy aligned with business objectives, including AWS as the primary platform and Azure for complementary use cases.
  • Define and evolve the cloud platform as a product, ensuring clear roadmaps, feedback loops, and continuous improvement for internal customers.
  • Provide leadership for vendor management, procurement, and managed service providers, ensuring alignment with contractual obligations, performance metrics, and cost optimization goals.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous learning within the team and across IT.
  • Mentor and develop future leaders through intentional career development, coaching, and succession planning.
  • Drive strategic workforce planning, talent development, and succession management to ensure the team is equipped for future demands.
  • Engage cross-functional business leaders to understand needs, co-create solutions, and ensure IT operations remain responsive to evolving business demands.
  • Oversee architecture design and implementation for secure, scalable, and reliable cloud environments (primarily AWS, with some Azure).
  • Build and maintain foundational cloud platforms (compute, storage, networking) for application and data teams to deploy and run workloads efficiently.
  • Build, lead, and mentor the cloud and data engineering teams


Successful Candidates Will Have:

  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in cloud architecture, engineering, or infrastructure management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role
  • 5+ years of experience leading and developing diverse teams
  • Demonstrated experience managing cloud environments at an enterprise scale
  • Demonstrated experience in cloud architecture design, automation, DevSecOps, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
  • Experience developing and managing budgets, vendor contracts, and service-level agreements
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect or equivalent certifications strongly preferred
  • Deep understanding of designing and building cloud platforms with a focus on security and platform engineering
  • Deep, hands-on experience with AWS including the Well Architected Framework for design, building and scaling workloads
  • High level of personal integrity when conducting the professional affairs of the Agency and dealing with sensitive and confidential information and processes
  • Proven ability to collaborate, build relationships and influence individuals at all levels including external vendors and service providers to ensure that segregation and overlapping roles are identified and coordinated
  • Strong analytical skills, the ability to perform under pressure and management of multiple priorities with competing demands for resources, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in process formulation, improvement, and documentation
  • Knowledge of best practices in development, technology, agile principles, DevSecOps frameworks, and best practices in software development, information security, project management and business process improvement
  • Demonstrated ability to manage resources effectively to meet resource constraints for large scale projects
  • Basic understanding of artificial intelligence, including the ability to design and construct effective prompts for AI systems

Work Environment:

  • This position is required to work on-site to supervise, support, and engage with direct reports and cross-functional teams
  • Typical office environment with considerable time in a sitting, stationary position
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office equipment including typing and keying
  • Frequently communicate with vendors, employees, and guests; must be able to exchange accurate information accordingly
  • Respond to building and technical emergencies including off hours as needed
  • Occasional travel required
