Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Client is seeking a highly motivated Director of Engineering. The ideal candidate will help to advance our growing team of engineers by mentoring, overseeing practice group performance, and supporting the development of the civil engineering team.
- This opportunity allows the selected candidate to work as part of a broad national team with offices in Chicago, Denver, and Dallas-Fort Worth area.
- The civil engineering group focuses on municipal and site development engineering, though it is open to growing new services as the team evolves. This role would support strategic planning, mentor staff, and oversee the group's performance.
- Some business development support would be expected, in addition to providing input on the direction of the company. This role would participate on the executive management team.
- Practice Leadership and Project Delivery
- Grow and diversify the practice with a focus on municipal engineering, site design engineering, and other services, as added.
- Work closely with the firm's principals to develop and execute the strategic direction for the group practice, balance workloads across regions and business lines, and pursue strategic business development opportunities.
- Lead the team in alignment with the client core principles, and cultivate a culture of shared trust, democracy, camaraderie, and excellence.
- Elevate the profile of the client by developing an external brand image and internal culture characterized by technical excellence, client satisfaction, consistent results, and innovation.
- Oversee the delivery of high-quality products and deliverables, and ensure that projects and deliverables meet or exceed client expectations.
- Participate in projects, either as a project manager, technical, or subject matter expert, with a reasonable level of billable utilization on major projects.
- Oversee the development and implementation of internal business operations and systems that improve efficiency and quality and support continual process improvement and innovation.
- Work closely with the firm's principals to provide strategic, administrative, and financial oversight of the practice.
- Oversee the financial performance of the group, including revenue and bottom-line delivery of the practice's portfolio of urban planning and design projects.
- Lead a team of high-performance design professionals, urban planners, subject matter experts, and other support staff.
- Motivate the team to achieve success in both business development and project delivery.
- Hire, manage, and mentor staff.
- Improve the diversity of the team to better reflect the clients and communities that we serve.
- Oversee employee development program, including performance planning and evaluation, training, and succession planning.
- Pursue grants, technical assistance, and other awards on behalf of our clients and partners.
- Represent the firm in the market through involvement in client and industry events and associations to promote intelligence gathering and pipeline development.
- Participate in professional associations, boards, and committees.
- Speak at conferences, publish papers, and earn professional certifications and accreditations.
- Participate in negotiations to secure contract awards.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings, interim progress meetings, close-out meetings, and other activities to ensure client satisfaction and resolution of project issues.
- Business Development

- Represent the firm in the market through involvement in client and industry events and associations to promote intelligence gathering and pipeline development.
- Participate in professional associations, boards, and committees.

Qualifications
- The ideal candidate is motivated, ambitious, and has a strong grasp of civil engineering methods, tools, and processes with a focus on transportation-related projects.
- Experience managing staff and project work.
- Extensive project design background, including overseeing design submittals and approvals.
- Ability to visit other offices (travel is typically limited to not more than once per month or less).
- Experience working with various agencies.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- 10+ years of civil engineering experience (PE preferred), with at least 4 years of managerial experience.
- Excellent project/time management skills.
- A desire and ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, and flexible work environment.
- Ability to manage multiple long-term projects and immediate tasks concurrently.
- Ability to work well in teams and individually.
- Exposure to business development.
- Eagerness to learn and grow executive skill sets.
- Must have a background in AutoCAD/Civil 3D.
