Director of Anatomic Pathology

Emory University School of Medicine's Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine seeks a dynamic and visionary academic pathologist to serve as Director of Anatomic Pathology at our Grady Memorial Hospital site. Grady is a renowned public academic hospital providing critical services to Atlanta and the surrounding communities. It is a major training site for the department's education programs, including one of the largest pathology residency programs in the country and several ACGME anatomic pathology subspecialty fellowships.

Grady's anatomic pathology division offers its faculty a rich and diverse diagnostic practice, including approximately 15,000 surgical pathology specimens, 3,200 non-GYN cytology specimens, 9,500 GYN cytology specimens, and 70 autopsies each year, with anticipated growth and planned adoption of digital pathology for primary diagnosis.

The Director will serve as a strategic, scholarly, and collaborative leader, overseeing clinical quality, faculty development, educational excellence, and program innovation across the division. This role is central to shaping the future of anatomic pathology at Grady and fostering a strong academic culture.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic and academic leadership for Anatomic Pathology, advancing excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor and support faculty, promoting professional development, academic engagement, and a shared commitment to high-quality diagnostic services, education, and scholarship.
  • Ensure high clinical standards through collaboration with the CLIA director and oversight of quality, compliance, and laboratory partnerships across histology, immunohistochemistry, and gross room operations.
  • Strengthen educational and training programs, ensuring outstanding instruction and mentorship of medical students, pathology residents, and fellows.
  • Champion innovation, including digital pathology adoption and data-driven quality initiatives aligned with departmental and institutional priorities.


Qualifications

Applicants must hold an MD or MD/PhD; be board-certified in Anatomic Pathology; and be eligible for medical licensure in Georgia. Candidates with 3-5 years of experience in general surgical pathology and/or subspecialty practice, along with demonstrated leadership skills, are strongly encouraged to apply. Faculty rank (Assistant, Associate, or Professor) and compensation will be commensurate with qualifications.
