Full Job Description
Title: Director of Accounting

Job Summary

This position is responsible for setting the strategic direction and managing services provided by the accounting office. The Director provides leadership for staff that provide accounting and financial reporting services including financial statement preparation, budget preparation and reporting, Tennessee Board of Regent and State of Tennessee required reporting, position control and budget, and any ad hoc financial or budgeting reporting. The position is also responsible for management reports that include analysis of trends and the status of delivered services. This role requires the director to participate in the department's day-to-day activities.

Job Duties

Budget:
  • Daily supervision of direct reports and may include indirect supervision of part-time employees.
  • Oversee the preparation of the Proposed, Revised & Estimated budgets.
  • Ensure budgets are submitted by due dates and in proper format to TBR.
  • Prepare budget summary as needed.

Year End/Month End/Financial Statements:
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly and year-end financial statements.
  • Coordinates month-end and annual close functions, including but not limited to Banner closingfunctions and year-end entries.
  • Responsible for reviewing and approving all journal entries for both month-end and year-endprocesses.

Daily Operations:
  • Manage the accounting and auditing of all monies of the college including restricted andunrestricted funds.
  • Perform all charts of account maintenance as necessary.
  • Fixed asset completion and review as needed.
  • Issue reports to aid management in forecasting cash flow, revenues, and balance sheet items.

Foundation:
  • Responsible for overseeing the preparation of the JSCC Foundation financials.
  • Manage the monthly reconciliations.
  • Review and maintain the investment allocations.
  • Prepare the annual tax form 990.

Audit:
  • Represent JSCC and Accounting Services in meetings with external auditors.
  • Responsible for annual requests from external auditors.

Administrative Duties:
  • Prepare annual staff evaluations while identifying and coordinating professional development opportunities to improve employee departmental effectiveness
  • Perform other duties as defined by the Assistant Vice President for Financial Reporting
  • Perform other duties as defined by the Executive Vice President of Financial Affairs and Student Services.
  • Daily supervision of direct reports.
  • Maintain functional efficiency and productivity by developing, implementing, and coordinating policies, procedures/processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field of study from a regionally accredited institution.
• 5+ years of accounting/finance experience.
• 5+ years of supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in accounting or related field of study from a regionally accredited institution preferred.
• Higher education business office experience.
• CPA license preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of best practices in an accounting/finance department.
• Must comprehend and interpret policies, procedures, and regulations and communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
• Ability to manage and provide team leadership vision and strategic direction while conveying this to those who report directly to this position.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written skills.
• Ability to build relationships, communicate effectively and work in a diverse environment.
• Working knowledge of accounting computer systems and Microsoft Excel.
• Occasional travel may be required for college or program activities

• Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times

Pay Rate: $73,431 - $91,788 (Annual salary depending on eligible experience, which is defined by the current compensation plan.)
