For over 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. 9 out of 9 times in the last decade, IJM’s Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50 and 85% for very large populations of people in poverty. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people from violence, we are seeking a Director, Accounting, Statutory Reporting to provide strategic and operational leadership for IJM’s global accounting and external financial reporting activities. This role ensures the integrity, timeliness, and transparency of consolidated financial reporting; leads the annual financial statement audit; and oversees preparation of the IRS Form 990, NICRA submission, and other applicable statutory reporting requirements.
This position is hybrid (onsite Tuesdays & Thursdays) if located in the Washington, DC area or remote for non-local candidates and reports to SVP, Accounting. This role requires current authorization to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position, now or in the future.
Leadership & Strategy
Provide strategic leadership for IJM's global accounting and external financial reporting function, ensuring excellence in stewardship, accountability, and compliance;
Lead the development and implementation of strategies that strengthen financial reporting quality, audit readiness, regulatory compliance, and global consolidation practices;
Supervise, develop, and coach accounting staff while providing technical guidance across global finance teams;
Drive continuous improvement initiatives that increase efficiency, enhance reporting quality, and reduce audit burden across the organization.
Financial Reporting & Technical Accounting
Oversee the preparation, review, and presentation of IJM's consolidated financial statements and related disclosures;
Research, evaluate, and document accounting conclusions for complex, unusual, or non-routine transactions;
Monitor and implement changes in US GAAP, FASB pronouncements, and other applicable accounting standards, including ASC 842 and future requirements;
Maintain ownership of accounting policies, reporting governance, and financial reporting methodologies that support organizational objectives.
Audit, Compliance & Statutory Reporting
Lead the annual consolidated financial statement audit and serve as the primary liaison for external audit activities;
Direct the preparation and review of IRS Form 990 filings, NICRA submissions, and other statutory reporting requirements;
Ensure year-round audit readiness through effective controls, reconciliations, reporting schedules, and review processes;
Support organizational compliance with charitable registrations, census reporting, BEA reporting, and other applicable regulatory obligations;
Maintain ownership of Statement of Functional Expense (SOFE) methodology, functional expense allocations, and reporting governance.
Partnership & Stakeholder Engagement
Serve as the primary accounting partner to FP&A, Legal, Regional Finance Directors, International Advancement Offices, country office finance teams, and other key stakeholders;
Build strong relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and third-party reporting partners to support accurate and timely financial reporting;
Partner with cross-functional leaders to evaluate financial reporting implications of organizational initiatives, operating results, emerging risks, and strategic decisions;
Provide leadership with meaningful analysis and recommendations related to accounting matters, regulatory developments, reporting risks, and compliance requirements.
Global Reporting Excellence
Strengthen global consolidation processes, reporting controls, and financial transparency across IJM's international operations;
Monitor significant financial reporting matters, local statutory audits, and emerging risks across country offices to ensure timely resolution and organizational alignment;
Collaborate with global finance teams to identify automation opportunities, reporting efficiencies, and process improvements that enhance stewardship outcomes; and
Participation in IJM’s community of spiritual formation.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required;
CPA required or strongly preferred;
Minimum eight (8) years of progressively responsible accounting, audit, global consolidation reporting, statutory reporting, or financial reporting experience;
Experience leading annual financial statement audits and regulatory reporting activities;
Demonstrated experience researching and applying US GAAP accounting guidance;
Experience with nonprofit financial reporting preferred;
Experience with Workday Financials preferred;
Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial analysis skills;
Advanced knowledge of US GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting;
Strong understanding of FASB standards and technical accounting research;
Experience with lease accounting under ASC 842;
Expertise in consolidated financial statement preparation and review;
Experience with Form 990 reporting requirements;
Understanding of indirect cost allocation methodologies and NICRA submissions; and
Strong analytical, data management, and problem-solving capabilities.
