DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a Director of Accounting, who will lead our accounting team, responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial reporting, inventory accounting, treasury, compliance, and tax management. This role ensures the integrity of financial statements, manages the annual audit process, and leads initiatives to improve financial processes and internal controls. You will work closely with leadership to ensure strong financial governance while also optimizing the company's accounting operations. This is an exciting opportunity to lead accounting operations in a fast-growing consumer products company. As the Director of Accounting, you will drive financial excellence, oversee tax compliance, and play a critical role in shaping the company's financial future. This is a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves role where you will be expected to personally execute critical accounting tasks alongside leading the team.

This is a hybrid role based in our DUMBO, Brooklyn office two days per week.

Base Salary: $170k - $200k

This range represents anticipated base salary range for this position, in addition to competitive benefits and equity (as applicable). We carefully assess and consider several factors with each candidate, including location, role-related knowledge, experience and skills. Compensation may vary based on these considerations

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Reporting & Compliance:
    • Manage annual financial statement audit process with external auditors.
    • Directly prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
    • Manage ABL compliance, including the preparation and submission of borrowing base certificates and management of inventory/AR collateral reporting.
    • Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and mitigate financial risks.

Accounting Operations & Systems:
    • Lead and mentor the team while remaining deeply involved in the day-to-day execution of accounting workflows.
    • Directly execute and own the month-end and year-end close process, including hands-on management of complex journal entries and reconciliations.
    • Directly manage and execute complex 3PL inventory accounting, reconciliations, and the integration between inventory management systems and NetSuite.
    • Maintain comprehensive debt schedules, track interest expense and deferred financing costs and amortization, and ensure alignment between the general ledger and loan systems
    • Manage general ledger integrity and oversee all reconciliations.
    • Ensure proper revenue recognition policies, including wholesale and e-commerce transactions.
    • Analyze AR reports and calculate AR allowances/reserves in accordance with GAAP
    • Optimize accounting workflows and automate processes where possible, including the further use of Netsuite system integrations and building AI workflows.

Tax Compliance & Treasury Management:
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local tax regulations
    • Oversee all sales tax compliance, ensuring accurate filings across multiple jurisdictions.
    • Manage Avalara tax software integration and ensure Shopify sales tax compliance.
    • Lead treasury functions, including cash management, bank relationships, and forecasting.
    • Implement best practices for corporate tax compliance and reporting.

Technology & Systems Leadership:
    • Ensure seamless integration between Shopify, Avalara, NetSuite, Ramp and other financial tools.
    • Partner with IT, Technology, and operations teams to enhance automation in financial reporting and tax compliance.
    • Assess and implement technology solutions to improve financial efficiency.


REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA preferred.
  • 7+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP and experience managing financial audits.
  • Direct experience with Shopify and Avalara is required.
  • Experience leading treasury functions, including cash flow forecasting and bank relations.
  • Expertise in multi-state sales tax compliance and tax reporting requirements.
  • Strong proficiency with NetSuite or other ERP systems.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with cross-functional teams.
  • Proven 'roll-up-your-sleeves' mentality with the ability to balance high-level strategy with tactical, hands-on execution.
