Full Job Description

Reporting to the Vice President, Investment Accounting, the Director, Investment Accounting will play a critical leadership, controllership and reporting role, and inspiring a team responsible for high quality and timely execution of monthly accounting and general ledger close, semi-annual financial reporting to Corporate Finance and legal entity management and reporting to key stakeholders.  With responsibilities for accounting and reporting of certain OMERS investment business units, this role ensures the accuracy, integrity and transparency of investment-related financial information, compliance with accounting standards and the effectiveness of financial controls and processes.

The Director will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams across the enterprise and will demonstrate expertise in technical accounting and accounting standards, deep experience in financial reporting and finance systems literacy and a track record of developing high-performing teams.  You are insightful, curious, energized by new opportunities and challenges and take pride in producing high quality work. Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead accurate and timely end-to-end delivery of monthly, quarterly and annual financial accounting and reporting, including chart of account maintenance across different systems.

  • Review of financial statements and note disclosures, ensuring compliance with accounting standards across a variety of GAAPS (e.g. IFRS, ASPE, US, UK), regulatory requirements and completeness and accuracy of financial data

  • Monitor changes in accounting standards, regulatory requirements and industry best practices; assessing their impact on OMERS investment finance activities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain standardized accounting procedures, robust financial controls, processes and systems to ensure data integrity

  • Drive continuous improvement of processes, including from new platform adoption, focused on efficiency, automation initiatives and resiliency of future state 

  • Mentor, develop, and manage Investment Accounting team members, fostering a high-performance, high-accountability culture while supporting career growth at OMERS

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Finance peers (Tax, Performance and Management Reporting, Corporate Finance, Valuations, Investment Operations) as well as with connected stakeholders across OMERS

  • Coordinate and liaise with internal and external auditors for fieldwork, as well as accounting, reporting and internal control matters

  • Use appropriate judgment in dealing with issues and requests, demonstrating the ability to effectively prioritize work, balance resource requirements and determine solutions

  • Other contributions, as the team may need and as opportunities arise

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • 10+ years’ relevant experience in progressive financial reporting and/or investment accounting roles

  • Post-secondary degree in business, accounting, or finance with a CPA designation

  • Strong knowledge of IFRS, fair value measurement and regulatory reporting relevant to pension funds and investment organizations. Strong business acumen and practical application skills.

  • Experience with the processes of financial accounting and reporting in a multi-business, international, complex enterprise. Ability to challenge the status quo and deliver new/innovative improvements to financial processes

  • Strong communication, presentation and stakeholder management skills

  • Experience managing audit processes and working with external auditors

  • Proven leadership skills, with experience building and managing high-performing teams

  • Experience and technical proficiency with eFront, Aladdin, Oracle and Workiva would be an asset
