A Brief Overview
The Director - General Accounting is responsible for leading core general accounting functions, financial close activities, and analytics initiatives within the Controller's Office. This role provides strategic and operational leadership over month-end close, capital and fixed asset accounting, prepaids, non-payroll accruals, intercompany and shared services accounting, and post-award grant accounting. The Director partners closely with leadership, Technology Digital Solutions (TDS), and operational departments to strengthen internal controls, drive process improvement, and develop scalable reporting and analytics capabilities. This role leads the adoption of company approved AI-enabled technologies, Power BI, Microsoft Power Platform solutions, and approved large language model (LLM) applications within general accounting operations, while supporting analytics and revenue reporting insights in an indirect capacity.

What you will do
  • Accounting, Analysis, Reporting & Analytics:
  • Directs and oversees the month-end close process for assigned functional areas including capital and fixed assets, prepaids, non-payroll accruals, intercompany and shared services accounting, and post-award grant accounting, ensuring timely and accurate close execution.
  • Oversees the preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and variance analysis across general accounting functional areas, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with close deadlines.
  • Reviews accounting transactions and reporting deliverables to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), organizational policies, and internal controls.
  • Leads the preparation and review of complex financial analyses, operational trends, and budget versus actual reporting for senior management.
  • Develops and maintains accounting analytics, dashboards, KPIs, and reporting tools to improve visibility into general accounting performance and operational metrics; supports analytics and revenue and accounts receivable reporting insights in an indirect and collaborative capacity with the Director of Revenue.
  • Supports annual financial statement audit activities, including audit schedules, supporting documentation, and resolution of audit inquiries.
  • Coordinates and supports ad hoc financial analysis and special projects for executive leadership and operational stakeholders.
  • Innovation, Automation & Technology:
  • Leads innovation initiatives within general accounting through the identification, implementation, and optimization of analytics, automation, AI, and business intelligence tools that improve close efficiency, reporting accuracy, and operational effectiveness.
  • Leads the implementation and use of Power BI and other BI analytics tools to enhance financial reporting, dashboards, and operational decision-making.
  • Partners with Technology Digital Solutions (TDS) and operational teams to identify opportunities for automation, digital transformation, and process optimization.
  • Supports implementation and utilization of Microsoft Power Platform tools, including Power BI, Power Automate, and Power Apps.
  • Partners with operational and technology teams to evaluate emerging technologies, including large language models (LLMs) and AI-enabled solutions, to improve accounting workflows and financial insights.
  • Supports development of standardized reporting packages, data governance practices, and KPI frameworks for accounting operations.
  • Staff Support & Development:
  • Provides leadership, mentorship, and guidance to managers, supervisors, accountants, analysts, and other finance personnel.
  • Assists staff with complex accounting transactions, policy interpretations, reporting challenges, and issue resolution.
  • Supports hiring activities including interviewing, onboarding, training, performance evaluations, and professional development.
  • Promotes a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration, customer service, and continuous improvement.
  • Support Service:
  • Serves as a key point of contact for accounting and financial reporting inquiries from departments, leadership, auditors, and operational stakeholders.
  • Communicates accounting guidance, reporting expectations, financial analytics, and operational insights clearly and effectively to both finance and non-finance audiences.
  • Resolves accounting and reporting issues in a timely, thoughtful, and customer-focused manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Management, Finance, or Accounting.


Experience Qualifications
  • Eight (8) or more years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience, including previous management responsibility.
  • Healthcare finance or healthcare accounting experience preferred.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Ability to lead operational accounting functions while driving strategic process improvements and analytics initiatives.
  • Experience with Microsoft Power Platform tools, including Power BI, Power Automate, and related analytics technologies.
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence tools, automation technologies, and large language models (LLMs) and their application within finance and accounting operations.
  • Ability to identify opportunities to leverage analytics, automation, and AI-enabled solutions to improve operational efficiency, reporting accuracy, and decision-making.
  • Ability to analyze large data sets, identify trends, develop insights, and make sound recommendations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal formats including presenting complex financial information to senior leadership.
  • Ability to supervise, coach, mentor, and develop high-performing teams.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial reporting skills.
  • Experience with ERP systems and healthcare information systems, including Epic and Workday preferred.


Licenses and Certifications
  • CPA - Certified Public Accountant


Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $94.35 - $125.03 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
