Director, Forward Deployed Engineering (Epic)

Remote - US

Job Summary

Qualified Health is seeking a Director of Epic Forward Deployed Engineering to build and lead the team that sits at the intersection of our AI platform and the health systems we serve. This is not a project management role-it's a technical leadership position for someone who has lived inside Epic implementations, knows how health system IT and clinical informatics teams operate, and can credibly design integration solutions in front of a CMIO or Epic interface team. You will build and run a pod of Epic Forward Deployed Engineers embedded at our client sites, owning the end-to-end journey from Epic workflow discovery through live production delivery of AI-powered clinical tools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and lead a team of Epic Forward Deployed Engineers, setting hiring standards, mentoring the team, and establishing the playbook for how QH integrates with health system Epic environments
  • Serve as executive technical sponsor for 2-3 strategic health system clients, owning the integration relationship at the CIO, CMIO, and Epic Principal Trainer level
  • Lead solution design sessions with client Epic and clinical informatics teams to map AI output delivery paths-CDS Hooks, SMART on FHIR sidebars, In Basket via SendMessage API, HL7 MDM T02 via Epic Bridges, and FHIR R4 write-back
  • Own the interface delivery roadmap for each client, managing calendar-driven dependencies (Epic interface configuration is the long pole) and setting realistic expectations internally and externally
  • Translate client clinical workflow requirements into clear platform specifications for QH's data engineering and product teams
  • Establish and maintain a reusable integration playbook across Epic modules (MyChart, Ambulatory, ClinDoc, Bridges) so each new client engagement starts faster than the last
  • Represent QH at client governance forums, steering committees, and executive briefings
  • Collaborate with internal Data and Product Engineering teams to align forward deployed integration work with the core platform roadmap

Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years in healthcare IT, Epic implementation, or clinical informatics, with at least 2 years in a leadership or principal role
  • Deep, hands-on experience with Epic's integration ecosystem: Bridges (HL7 v2 interfaces), SMART on FHIR, CDS Hooks, MyChart, and In Basket / SendMessage API
  • Proven track record running Epic go-lives or directing implementations at Epic partner organizations, Epic consulting firms, or large health systems
  • Executive-level communication-comfortable presenting architecture decisions to a health system CTO, facilitating workflow design sessions with clinical champions, and debugging interface issues with an Epic analyst in the same day
  • Experience managing client relationships end-to-end, including scope negotiation, escalation management, and stakeholder alignment across large, matrixed health system organizations
  • Familiarity with FHIR R4 interoperability standards and modern EHR integration patterns
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical, clinical, or healthcare-related field

Preferred Skills
  • Epic certification in one or more modules (Bridges, Ambulatory, ClinDoc, MyChart, Orders)
  • Experience deploying or designing SMART on FHIR applications in production Epic environments
  • Background in clinical decision support design or clinical informatics roles inside a health system
  • Familiarity with healthcare AI or clinical NLP applications (e.g., risk stratification, autonomous coding, prior authorization)
  • Experience working across multiple EHR platforms beyond Epic (Cerner, Athenahealth, etc.)

What Success Looks Like
  • A repeatable, documented integration playbook that reduces time-to-live for each new client by 30%+ compared to baseline
  • Client Epic and clinical informatics teams who trust QH as a credible technical partner-not just a vendor
  • A Forward Deployed Engineering team that is proactive-identifying Epic configuration issues before they block delivery, not after
  • Clear, consistent feedback loops from the field into the product and data engineering teams

Impact & Growth Opportunity

This role is central to QH's ability to scale. Every health system we serve runs Epic. Getting AI outputs into Epic workflows-trusted by clinicians, embedded in the right moment of care-is where clinical impact actually happens. The Director of Epic Forward Deployed Engineering owns that last mile. As QH scales to 100K+ users across 50+ health systems, this team and the playbooks you build will be a core competitive differentiator. The growth path from this role extends into VP-level technical leadership or a Chief Integration Officer function as the organization matures.

Pay & Benefits: The pay range for this role is between $190,000 and $240,000, and will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. This role is also eligible for equity and benefits.
