Director of Fleet Operations

Summary

The Director of Fleet Operations provides strategic leadership for the organization's transportation fleet, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective operations. This role is responsible for overseeing fleet performance, driver management, regulatory compliance, and operational execution while driving continuous improvement initiatives that support business objectives, customer satisfaction, and employee engagement. The Director partners with cross-functional stakeholders to optimize transportation strategies, enhance service levels, and develop a high-performing fleet organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute fleet and transportation strategies that align with organizational goals and drive operational excellence.
  • Oversee day-to-day fleet operations, ensuring service, safety, quality, and productivity objectives are consistently achieved.
  • Manage, coach, and develop transportation leaders, drivers, and support staff to build a high-performing and engaged workforce.
  • Monitor key performance indicators, operational costs, asset utilization, and service metrics to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve fleet performance.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations, company policies, and safety standards.
  • Promote a culture of safety by implementing and enforcing best practices, training programs, and compliance initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain, Distribution, Customer Experience, and other business partners to improve transportation effectiveness and customer satisfaction.
  • Develop workforce and succession planning strategies to support organizational growth and operational stability.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, equipment, and transportation solutions to improve fleet capabilities and operational performance.
  • Manage departmental budgets, resources, and capital investments to support business objectives and maximize return on investment.
  • Lead change management efforts and successfully implement new processes, systems, and operational initiatives.


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Transportation, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • Master's degree preferred.


Experience

  • 8+ years of progressive leadership experience in fleet, transportation, logistics, or supply chain operations.
  • Proven success leading large-scale transportation or fleet operations across multiple locations.
  • Strong knowledge of transportation regulations, DOT compliance, fleet management practices, and safety programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic initiatives that improve operational performance and service levels.
  • Experience managing budgets, operational metrics, and continuous improvement programs.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and talent development skills with a track record of building high-performing teams.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
  • Experience leading organizational change and driving operational transformation initiatives.
  • Proficiency with transportation management systems, fleet technologies, and performance reporting tools.
