About the Role

Reporting to the AVP, Financial Reporting, this role plays a critical leadership role in the preparation and delivery of Sun Life Financial Inc.'s (SLF) consolidated external financial statements for senior management, the Board of Directors, regulators, and investors.

The successful candidate is accountable for leading the quarterly and annual external reporting process, providing senior leadership with meaningful financial insights, and supporting the continued transformation of reporting processes through the use of technology, including AI.

Success in this role requires strong IFRS and financial reporting expertise, excellent stakeholder management skills, a drive for process improvement and innovation, and the ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization. The role offers broad exposure to teams across Sun Life and an enterprise-wide perspective of the business.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Lead the preparation and delivery of quarterly and annual external financial statements for SLF and certain subsidiaries/affiliated entities of SLF
  • Collaborate with teams across the organization to consolidate and validate information supporting financial statements note disclosures, ensuring the completeness and accuracy of financial results, and compliance with GAAP or other regulatory requirements
  • Support senior management and other stakeholders to proactively identify, understand, and explain key messages, trends and variances
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on all disclosure-related matters, leading discussions with key stakeholders and business partners, including those with senior executives
  • Partner with the Accounting Advisory team to understand accounting, reporting and disclosure impacts of transactions and changes in accounting standards
  • Monitor and benchmark emerging disclosure trends, regulatory developments, and best practices across financial services and insurance peers to support the quality, consistency, and compliance of Sun Life's public disclosures
  • Ensure a strong control environment for external reporting, including ownership of SOX-compliant processes and coordination with external auditors during quarterly reviews and annual audits
  • Drive process improvement initiatives and ad-hoc projects through the use of technology, including AI, to enhance existing processes
  • Lead, mentor, and develop talent in the organization as a key leader in Sun Life's co-op and CPA rotational program
  • Support strategic initiatives and projects as required


What You'll Need To Succeed
  • CPA designation or equivalent with at least 7 years of experience post-qualification
  • Strong understanding of IFRS accounting principles, life insurance accounting, and the regulatory environment for life insurers
  • Strong technical, analytical, research, and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail. Connects the big picture, understands the business and manages complexity across deliverables
  • Collaborative working style with excellent interpersonal, influencing, and stakeholder management skills, and a demonstrated ability to build effective relationships and drive outcomes across all levels of the organization
  • Self-starter with strong organizational and project management skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and the capability to communicate complex analyses and recommendations clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Proven people leader who fosters engagement and collaboration, develops talent, and influences teams to achieve business objectives
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry, experience with XBRL, and experience with a reporting cloud platform would be assets


The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
