Full Job Description
The Director, Finance - Canada provides leadership and oversight of key accounting, financial reporting, and controllership activities for Dollar Tree's Canadian operations, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial results.

This leader will oversee critical components of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, strengthen financial controls, and ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, Canadian statutory requirements, company policies, and SOX requirements. The Director will also partner closely with Finance and business leaders in Canada and the U.S. to support budgeting and forecasting, improve financial processes, and provide insights that enable sound business decisions.

This is a highly visible leadership role requiring strong technical accounting expertise, financial acumen, cross-functional partnership, and the ability to develop high-performing teams in a complex, fast-paced organization.
What You'll Do
Financial Accounting & Controllership
  • Provide leadership and oversight for accounting and controllership activities, ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial results.
  • Lead key components of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting in accordance with U.S. GAAP and company policies.
  • Partner closely with cross-functional teams in Canada and Finance and Accounting teams in the U.S. to ensure alignment and consistency in financial reporting and accounting practices.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Canadian statutory requirements related to tax, accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Review financial results, account reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules to identify trends, variances, risks, and potential accounting issues.
  • Ensure accounting transactions are properly recorded, classified, documented, and supported in accordance with established policies and accounting standards.
  • Provide technical accounting guidance and determine appropriate accounting treatment for complex or non-routine transactions.
  • Maintain a strong internal control environment and ensure financial processes and documentation support compliance with SOX requirements.
  • Partner with internal and external auditors, providing appropriate documentation and ensuring timely resolution of audit requests and findings.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
  • Oversee the preparation and review of financial statements, management reporting, and supporting financial schedules.
  • Analyze financial performance and significant account fluctuations, providing senior leadership with clear explanations of results, trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Partner with FP&A and business leaders to ensure alignment between accounting results, forecasts, budgets, and overall business performance.
  • Support the preparation of annual budgets and updates to monthly financial forecasts.
  • Develop reporting and financial insights that improve visibility into business performance and support informed decision-making.
  • Identify potential financial risks and proactively partner with leaders to develop appropriate solutions and corrective actions.
Process Improvement & Financial Controls
  • Lead continuous improvement and automation initiatives that simplify financial processes, reduce manual activities, increase efficiency, and strengthen the overall control environment.
  • Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures, controls, and documentation to promote consistency and compliance across the organization.
  • Partner with Finance, IT, and other cross-functional teams on system implementations, enhancements, integrations, and broader transformation initiatives.
  • Ensure effective financial controls are incorporated into new processes, systems, and business initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the scalability, accuracy, and efficiency of accounting and financial reporting processes.
Leadership & Business Partnership
  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing Finance team, establishing clear expectations and creating opportunities for continued professional growth.
  • Serve as a trusted financial advisor to senior leaders and cross-functional partners, providing guidance on accounting, financial controls, and business decisions.
  • Build strong partnerships across Accounting, FP&A, Treasury, Tax, Internal Audit, Operations, IT, and other business functions in Canada and the U.S.
  • Translate complex financial and accounting matters into clear, actionable insights for both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Champion a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
What You'll Bring
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and/or finance experience, including significant experience in controllership, financial accounting, or financial reporting.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience with demonstrated success leading, coaching, and developing accounting or finance professionals.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, accounting principles, and internal controls.
  • Experience leading or playing a significant role in monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Strong understanding of SOX compliance and internal control requirements within a large, complex organization.
  • Experience partnering effectively with internal and external auditors.
  • Strong executive communication, business partnership, and influencing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through change, solve complex problems, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and experience working with enterprise financial systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.
  • Public accounting experience.
  • Experience working within a large, publicly traded company.
  • Retail or other high-volume, multi-location industry experience.
  • Experience with large-scale ERP and financial systems.
  • Experience leading finance transformation, process automation, or financial system implementation initiatives.


Salary Range: $175,000-$194,000 base + 25% bonus + equity
