Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARYThe
Director of Construction is responsible for the cost-effective and timely completion of all phases of At Home construction for new stores, remodels and other capital projects, with a strong focus on evaluating and renovating existing big box real estate. This hands-on role involves proactive troubleshooting throughout the renovation process to meet At Home specifications while minimizing upfront capital expenditures and ensuring functional store designs. Collaborating closely with the Real Estate Department and Store Operations, the Director oversees projects from pre-planning to turnover, addressing design issues with architects, engineers, and contractors. Additionally, this position includes managing a construction team and budgets, ensuring timely store delivery, and providing strategic recommendations to management regarding capital expenditures and operational functionality.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Leadership & Strategy
- Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to the construction team, ensuring effective management of all projects.
- Develop and implement construction strategies aligned with the company's expansion, remodel, and other initiatives.
- Partner with cross-functional teams, including Real Estate, Design, Merchandising, Store Operations and Finance, to support overall corporate and retail strategies.
- Project Management
- Oversee planning, execution, and delivery of new store builds store remodels, and other initiatives.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with the company's quality and safety standards.
- Proactively establish cost effective work order proposals in advance of bid solicitation
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing resources and driving timely decision-making.
- Develop construction & zoning analysis in addition to all necessary due-diligence reports.
- Review and approve project budgets, schedules, and construction documents.
- Vendor and Contractor Management
- Negotiate contracts and ensure all contractual obligations are met.
- Meets with local municipalities to determine permitting requirements and/or code issues involved with turning location into an At Home retail store.
- Conduct regular site visits to ensure work progresses according to plan. Identify and mitigate potential risks.
- Sources contractors that will participate in the bidding process for construction work
- Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all construction projects comply with local building codes, safety regulations, and zoning laws.
- Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement the best practices in construction project management.
- Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and innovations in retail construction.
- Drive efficiency and productivity enhancements through best practices and technology where appropriate.
- Budgeting & Cost Control
- Develop and manage construction budgets.
- Develop work plans and pro-forma budgets for input into Company's site selection process for projects.
- Facilitate reimbursement to At Home for any amounts due under lease agreements.
QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor's degree in construction management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in construction management, with a focus on retail or commercial construction.
- Proven track record of successfully managing multiple large-scale projects from design through completion.
- Experience with both new store builds and remodels is preferred.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage a diverse team and foster collaboration.
- Excellent project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong understanding of construction contracts, budgeting, and cost control.
- Exceptional communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of local building codes, permitting processes, and safety regulations.
- Proficiency in construction management software and tools (e.g., Procore, MS Project).
- Ability to travel regularly to project sites.
