Full Job Description
UPMC Center for Nursing Excellence is seeking a Director of Clinical Practice Operations and Standardization. The Director is responsible for supporting the planning, coordination, and execution of key clinical practice operations initiatives within the UPMC Health Services Division. The Director, Clinical Practice Operations and Standardization partners with nursing and operational leaders to support PolicyStat implementation, nursing practice alignment, and systemwide standardization efforts. This role also leads other special projects assigned by Health Services Division leadership.

Responsibilities
  • Supports clinical practice operations initiatives across the UPMC Health Services Division, including PolicyStat implementation, nursing practice alignment, and systemwide standardization efforts in partnership with CNOs, nursing leaders, and operational stakeholders.
  • Provides operational support and coordination for the wound care service line.
  • Drives clinical content management, helping ensure workflows, protocols, guidelines, order sets, and operational processes support consistent, high-quality care delivery.
  • Supports additional strategic initiatives and enterprise projects as assigned by the Chief Nurse Executive or their designee.
  • Coordinates planning for clinical and ancillary operations during facility moves or transitions. Assesses training needs for project teams and supports identification of relevant training materials and approaches to address those needs.
  • Reviews workflows related to clinical content, including protocols, guidelines, order sets, and operational workflow.
  • Identifies barriers to change with internal clients; supports plans to address change barriers and promote acceptance of the change process.
  • Builds follow-up mechanisms and maintenance plans into project deliverables to support sustainability and confirm intended business value is delivered.
  • Recognizes and escalates urgent matters appropriately; supports decision-making that may influence project direction. Applies analytical methods and tools to assess issues, identify options, and support problem solving.
  • Prioritizes tasks based on relative importance and urgency and identifies dependencies across projects.
  • Collaborates with Clinical Transformation, Communications, Community Relations, Construction, Facilities, Finance, Hospitality, Human Resources, Information Technology, Medical Affairs, Operations, Patient Care Services and Regulatory.
  • Supports continuous improvement efforts to streamline operational processes and improve efficiency. Coordinates inter-departmental activities to enhance integration and consistency across the hospital system.
  • Maintains compliance with accrediting bodies (i.e., TJC, ACRO, DOH, OSHA, etc.) and ensures activities are conducted in compliance with organizational policy and local, state, and federal laws and regulations, governing activities, organizational structures, management philosophy and mission and vision statements.
  • Develops and maintains internal and external customer relationships, including medical staff, employees, patients, parents, payers, and vendors. Identifies customer needs, supports mechanisms to monitor satisfaction, and develops operating plans to address areas of dissatisfaction. Supports effective communication channels between physicians, employees, and managers.
  • Partners with business unit leaders to support development and communication of policies required as a result of project implementation.
  • If relevant to scope of department care, demonstrates active commitment to ongoing improvement or maintenance of hand hygiene performance through monitoring of compliance in meeting unit-specific target number of monthly observations.
  • As a leader supporting clinical operations, identifies and mitigates safety risks and hazards that could impact patient and/or staff safety and escalates risks and hazards to leadership as appropriate.
  • Supports clinical, financial, and human resources priorities for improvement in concert with organizational goals.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in supporting department budget management and promotes efficient use of resources, including flexible staffing patterns to meet patient care needs when applicable.

Qualifications:

  • BSN required.
  • Master's degree required.
  • 5 years of experience in healthcare operations, clinical operations, project management, consulting, or related area.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of health care professionals both in and outside the organization.
  • Strong management skills. Ability to develop, motivate and lead teams or workgroups to accomplish specific goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated skill in managing complex workstreams with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong critical thinking skills. Ability to analyze complex information; summarize key trends or findings; identify root cause issues; evaluate pros and cons of alternative solutions; and support sound operational and financial decisions.
  • Ability to collaborate with physicians, staff, operational leaders, hospital administration, corporate partners, and other senior leadership. Experience in a health care setting, including exposure to information systems and business planning, is required.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders, support alignment around ideas and priorities, and facilitate decision-making across teams.

Additional Licensure Information
  • Pennsylvania RN licensure preferred.
