The Director, Cancer Clinical Programs provides visionary leadership for a diverse portfolio of provincial clinical programs that drive excellence in cancer care across Ontario. This influential role is responsible for advancing quality improvement, clinical standards, innovation, and system-wide initiatives that enhance patient outcomes and experiences throughout the cancer journey.


Leading a broad portfolio that includes Psychosocial Oncology, Survivorship, Symptom Management, Oncology Nursing, Surgical Oncology, Radiation and Systemic Treatment, Cancer Care Integration, Specialized Services, and Patient Experience & Engagement, the Director partners with provincial clinical leaders and healthcare stakeholders to identify emerging needs, shape strategic priorities, and translate evidence into meaningful action.

The Director is accountable for developing and executing strategies that improve quality, access, equity, and outcomes across the cancer system. Through strong relationships, innovative thinking, and a commitment to continuous improvement, they drive transformational change, respond to evolving system challenges, and identify opportunities to strengthen cancer care delivery across the province.


As a senior leader, the Director oversees a high-performing multidisciplinary team, ensuring the people, resources, and capabilities are in place to successfully deliver on the portfolio's mandate. The successful candidate will be a collaborative and inspiring leader with a passion for person-centred care, a track record of driving innovation, and the ability to thrive in a complex, fast-paced healthcare environment.

Here is what you will be doing:


Working in conjunction with provincial clinical and administrative leaders:


  • Promotes and leads a person-centred approach, and ensures the work is aligned with the Ontario Cancer Plan and other Ontario Health priorities
  • Provides strategic oversight for the development and execution of annual and multi-year plans across the portfolio, including quality improvement, implementation and system transformation initiatives.
  • Partners with Provincial Clinical Leads to establish strategic priorities, provide provincial clinical leadership and build key relationships with clinical experts, system partners and other stakeholders.
  • Establishes and oversees provincial advisory structures, expert panels, working groups and communities of practice to inform program priorities and implementation.
  • Engages and builds relationships with various organizations and partners and fosters an integrated approach across program areas.
  • Provides strategic and operational leadership to managers and clinical leads within the portfolio
  • Builds and maintains effective relationships with Ontario Health portfolios, the Ministry of Health, Regional Cancer Programs, hospitals, clinical leaders and other provincial and external partners.
  • Oversees annual and multi-year portfolio planning and determines the human and financial resources required to deliver strategic and operational priorities.
  • Provides system-level leadership to identify emerging issues, opportunities and innovations and translate them into actionable provincial strategies.
  • Oversees the development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-informed clinical guidance, standards, recommendations, tools and other resources to support high-quality cancer care.
  • Provides full people leadership through a team of managers, including recruitment, performance management, coaching and development, succession planning and establishment of clear accountabilities and priorities.
  • Oversees the recruitment, onboarding, performance and ongoing engagement of Provincial Clinical Leads and other clinical experts.
  • Develops and advances business cases, funding proposals and recommendations to support provincial clinical and system priorities.
  • Collaborate with internal and external project teams, partners, government, working groups, committees, and colleagues to conceptualize, secure funding, plan and implement quality improvement initiatives
  • Works across Ontario Health portfolios to advance shared priorities, manage interdependencies and identify and mitigate organizational and system-level risks.
  • Manages portfolio budgets and ensures effective stewardship of financial and human resources..

 

Here is what you will need to be successful:


Education and Experience


  • Completion of a Master’s degree in Public Health, Health Administration, or another relevant field is preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience leading, developing, and supporting teams through projects, programs, and/or direct people leadership
  • Clinical work experience in a large multi-specialty clinic, acute healthcare facility or other large multi-specialty health group is an asset
  • Broad understanding of changing priorities, trends, legislative requirements and/or other internal and external emerging issues and their potential impacts on goals, priorities and activities within the function and across the organization
  • Experience engaging with patients and families through excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to deal with stakeholders coming from a variety of perspectives
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse partners, including senior management, clinicians, scientists, staff and external partners in a multi-disciplinary environment

 

Knowledge and Skill


  • Role requires interpersonal and communication skills to manage multiple stakeholders in large scale system operations management and to collaborate effectively in design/development phase to “steady state” operations
  • Knowledge of clinical practice guidelines and their development; evidence-based decision-making; and the ability to comprehend and critically appraise articles from the medical literature
  • Senior level knowledge and demonstrated skills related to key management practices for leadership – people, process, technology
