Full Job Description
GEICO is seeking a Director, Assistant General Counsel to manage a group of senior attorneys and to lead and negotiate GEICO’s most strategic and complex commercial transactions. This role reports to the leader of the Legal Operations and Commercial Law Division and serves as a strategic partner to business, product, technology, and procurement leadership. The Director will oversee a high-performing group of senior attorneys supporting GEICO’s most complex and strategic enterprise-wide transactions, while leading complex deals and advancing a modern, scalable legal operating model. Location Hybrid role (3 days onsite) in Bethesda, MD or New York, NY. Key Responsibilities - Lead, develop, and manage a group of senior attorneys - Foster a high-performance culture through coaching, mentoring, workload management, and professional development of senior attorneys - Lead and negotiate a wide range of complex commercial agreements including technology, SaaS, marketing, HR, claims, data, and professional services agreements - Serve as a key escalation point for complex, high-impact transactions and negotiations - Provide practical, business-oriented legal guidance that enables innovation while appropriately managing risk - Partner with senior leaders across product, technology, procurement, and business teams to support strategic initiatives and execute deals - Drive continuous improvement of contracting processes, tools, and policies, including adoption of AI, automation, contract lifecycle management (CLM) capabilities, and data-driven performance metrics - Implement and monitor KPIs such as cycle time, throughput, and risk outcomes for the contracting team to improve efficiency and transparency Qualifications - Juris Doctor from an accredited law school - 10+ years of experience advising on complex commercial and technology transactions - 5+ years of experience leading attorneys, including senior counsel or other highly experienced legal professionals - Proven ability to operate as a strategic partner to senior business stakeholders - Extensive experience negotiating high-value commercial agreements, particularly in technology and services - Demonstrated ability to enhance mature processes through thoughtful, incremental improvements - Strong judgment, prioritization, and ability to translate complex legal issues into practical guidance Annual Salary $179,375.00 - $280,850.00 The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
