Summary

The Center for AI & Digital Experience (AIDE) is a joint, mission-driven center jointly established between University Hospitals (UH)-Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) to focus on advancing human-centered artificial intelligence in healthcare.

The Director, AI Studio, is the senior leader of the Product and Technology Core within the Center for AIDE. The Director will provide strategic leadership for the design, development, and implementation of AI-driven products (i.e., models, algorithms, and applications) for research, operational solutions, and innovation within AIDE. This role serves as the primary lead over the AI product strategy, technical architecture, and development engineering, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and regulatory requirements. The Director is responsible for advancing a portfolio of innovative initiatives, including large-scale applied AI projects in medicine and healthcare operations, and for establishing the infrastructure, processes, and partnerships to support sustainable development, enabling efficient deployment.

Principal Functional Responsibilities

Product Development and Technical Leadership: Define and execute the strategic vision for the AI Products and Technology Core, including development of a scalable portfolio of AI-enabled products. Lead front-end product lifecycle activities, including concept development, feasibility assessment, research or business case development, technical design, model development, and validation. Establish and inspect system architecture and technical standards to ensure interoperability and compliance with institutional regulatory requirements. Collaborate with internal IT teams and external partners (as needed) to align infrastructure, data access, and security protocols for scalability. Oversee all AI model development and implementation efforts to ensure performance quality.

Program Oversight and Execution: Direct a portfolio of high-impact, large-scale AI initiatives designed to address strategic institutional research, clinical priorities, and operational excellence. Establish and implement a formal intake, evaluation, and prioritization process for project selection. Lead resource allocation and execution planning for selected initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and available capacity. Oversee project timelines and the bench performance of all deliverables. Recruit and supervise key personnel supporting this portfolio. Ensure that projects progress from pilot testing through validation testing and, where appropriate, into potential commercialization pathways.

Operations, Infrastructure, and Program Enablement: Develop and operationalize core processes required to support AI product development, including compliance and risk mitigation strategies. Establish foundational technical infrastructure to enable efficient development and validation of AI solutions. Partner with institutional stakeholders to integrate existing initiatives into the AI Product and Technology Core structure and ensure coordinated execution. Support the development of mechanisms for learner and trainee engagement in AI initiatives, including structured opportunities for student participation in applied projects.

Governance and Institutional Integration: Work closely with executive leadership to ensure alignment of AI initiatives with institutional strategy. Coordinate with the AI Enablement Senior Manager to ensure responsible development and enablement of AI technologies for subsequent deployment. Serve as a key liaison between academic, clinical, and operational stakeholders to facilitate the adoption and integration of AI solutions. Provide subject matter expertise and strategic guidance on emerging AI trends and their application within healthcare and education. Communicate complexities of AI effectively with AI-fluent and non-AI fluent team members, clinicians, and executive leadership.

Administrative and Program Management Responsibilities:

Develop and manage budgets for AI Product and Technology Core operations and project portfolios. Contribute to strategic planning, reporting, and performance evaluation activities. Support the development of materials to communicate program goals, outcomes, and impact to internal and external stakeholders. Directly supervise and evaluate multiple employees, including product managers, AI/ML engineers, solutions architects, data engineers, etc.

Miscellaneous Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience with innovation program leadership, startup incubation, or product commercialization.
  • Familiarity with regulatory, ethical, and governance considerations related to AI in healthcare.
