Job Class: 0993 Director

Salary Range: $148,215 - $198,901/annually

Appointment Type: Permanent Exempt (what does this mean?)

Length of Appointment: PEX not to exceed three (3) years. This position is excluded by the Charter from competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

Calendar: Full Time / Full Year

The Director of Transportation leads the District's student transportation program to ensure safe, reliable, equitable, and cost-effective transportation services for all SFUSD students, including general education, special education, and extracurricular programming.

Essential Duties

The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list.

As the Director of Transportation, you will:
• Provide leadership and overall management of the District's transportation services and operations
• Develop and implement transportation policies, procedures, and long-range service plans
• Oversee routing, scheduling, vendor performance, safety monitoring, and service delivery
• Supervise professional, technical, and administrative transportation staff
• Manage transportation vendor contracts and service agreements
• Oversee preparation and management of the Transportation Department budget
• Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation and safety laws
• Serve as the primary liaison with city, county, and state agencies
• Prepare Board of Education reports and agenda items
• Lead emergency response and continuity planning for transportation services
• Perform other related duties as assigned

• Knowledge of facilities management best practices in a public school district sector setting
• A proven record of managing organizational change and initiating key innovations
• Strong systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy, as well as develop new systems and processes
• Ability to work effectively across multiple functions and roles within a complex organizations
• Experience and success with effective written and verbal communication, facilitation and presentations to large groups and a variety of audiences (e.g., staff meetings, executive briefings, public board meetings, memos)
• Experience working with operations management (work order) software
• Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. / B.S) from an accredited college or university in public administration, transportation management, business administration, or a closely related field
  • Four (4) years of professional-level experience in transportation management or a related field that covers fleet logistics, route optimization software, regulatory compliance, carrier negotiations, and budget administration
  • Strategic leadership and management experience; in a K-12 public educational setting preferred


Substitution

Education requirements may be substituted for additional professional-level experience on a year for-year basis.
