Full Job Description
This is a deeply technical, hands-on role for a leader who is passionate about writing and deploying code. This role is accountable for management of complex/critical/large professional disciplinary areas and People Leadership. Requires a comprehensive understanding of multiple areas within a function and how they interact in order to achieve the objectives of the function. Applies in-depth understanding of the business impact of technical contributions. A good understanding of the industry, direct competitors' products and services, is also necessary in order to contribute to the commercial objectives of the business. Requires thorough understanding of strategic direction of the function within the relevant part of the business, combined with a solid conceptual/practical grounding in both the function and/or area of expertise and related subject areas. Excellent communication skills required in order to negotiate internally, often at a senior level. Responsible for executing functional strategy in area managed. Accountable for end results, budgeting, planning, policy formulation and contribution to future strategy of the area(s). Full management responsibility for multiple teams, including management of people, budget and planning, to include duties such as performance evaluation, compensation, hiring, disciplinary actions and terminations and budget approval.

This engineering leader will be expected to drive innovation and technical excellence within our Travel and Benefits platform. The leader will own the end-to-end engineering strategy for digital travel benefits products, championing best practices in software design, architecture, and delivery across cross-functional teams. The leader will partner closely with product, design, and business stakeholders to build scalable, resilient systems that power seamless travel experiences for our customers. This is a unique opportunity to shape the technical direction of a high-impact domain at the intersection of financial services and travel.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a high-performing team of experienced engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence to deliver the latest products in agentic commerce.
  • Actively write, test, and deploy production-grade code, setting the standard for engineering excellence. This is a hands-on-keyboard role where you will be directly involved in the full software development lifecycle, from concept to deployment.
  • Design and implement comprehensive telemetry and observability dashboards to monitor the performance, health, and business impact of our agentic commerce platforms in real-time.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment, with the ability to operate and deliver customer-facing capabilities with minimal initial requirements. This includes proactively defining and creating detailed requirements where they are lacking.
  • Pioneer and integrate the use of Agentic AI coding platforms (e.g., Devin.AI, Anthropic Claude for coding, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate development cycles, improve code quality, and automate complex engineering tasks.
  • Take the lead on the design, implementation, and successful delivery of large-scale software solutions, particularly those leveraging Generative AI, Agentic AI, and the latest AI technologies.
  • Design approaches and personally contribute noteworthy code (e.g., a significant refactor that simplifies architecture, offers significant extensibility, or has organization-wide operational impact). Your hands-on expertise will be critical, with deep involvement in prototyping and developing with technologies including Java, Swift, and modern AI/ML frameworks.
  • Identify and tackle intrinsically hard problems, especially in the realm of autonomous and intelligent commerce systems.
  • Lead and actively participate in design reviews, aligning teams across your organization towards coherent architectural strategies for AI-driven platforms.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends, effectively researching and benchmarking our technology against competing software, with a particular focus on the latest AI technology and its application.
  • Contribute to intellectual property (e.g., invent, submit patents, etc.).
  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, and applying sound ethical judgment.

Qualifications:
  • 15+ years of relevant experience in a senior Engineering or Technology leadership role, with a recent and demonstrable history of hands-on coding.
  • First-class leadership skills, with proven experience leading teams of senior, highly experienced engineers to deliver complex, cutting-edge products in the agentic commerce space.
  • Extensive experience with modern telemetry, monitoring, and observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, OpenTelemetry) to ensure system reliability and performance.
  • Proven ability to operate and deliver in an environment with minimal requirements, including experience in creating and defining product and technical requirements from high-level, ambiguous concepts.
  • Proven, hands-on experience writing and deploying code in a production environment. You must be proficient in the entire software development lifecycle.
  • Practical experience and proficiency in using Agentic AI coding platforms and AI-powered development tools (e.g., Devin.AI, Anthropic Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to build and debug complex applications.
  • Demonstrable hands-on experience in designing, building, and shipping products that utilize Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), and Agentic AI systems.
  • Strong, hands-on proficiency in modern programming languages such as Java and Swift, with experience building high-performance, scalable, and secure applications.
  • Proven track record of staying ahead of the curve with the latest AI technology and translating that knowledge into tangible, innovative product features and platforms.
