About the Role

The Digital Communications & Marketing Manager serves as Heal the Bay's lead for digital communications and content creation, with primary ownership of the organization's social media presence and website. This role grows our digital audiences, creates content that connects people to Heal the Bay's mission, and moves those audiences toward action: volunteering, membership, event attendance, advocacy, and giving. The role works across departments and partners closely with the Development team to ensure digital channels actively support fundraising priorities, including annual appeals, monthly giving, signature events, and donor stewardship.

Expectations & Responsibilities

Social Media & Digital Content

  • Develop and implement social media digital content strategy across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and emerging platforms; create, schedule, publish, and monitor content including graphics, video, stories, and campaigns.
  • Manage the organizational content calendar and coordinate messaging across departments, with fundraising campaign dates built in as fixed anchors.
  • Write and edit content across channels, translating scientific, policy, and programmatic work into engaging public-facing storytelling aligned with organizational voice and brand.
  • Engage followers, partners, influencers, and community organizations to grow audiences and deepen engagement against defined targets.


Website & Email Marketing

  • Maintain and update organizational websites in WordPress, including webpages, event listings, blog posts, landing pages, and campaign content.
  • Build and maintain appeal landing pages, event registration pages, and giving-related web content in partnership with the Development and Community Engagement teams.
  • Develop and distribute email campaigns, newsletters, event promotions, and fundraising appeals in Emma, managing segmentation, testing, and list coordination.
  • Implement SEO and user experience best practices, with attention to clear pathways from content to action (sign up, register, join, give).


Development & Event Communications

  • Partner with the Development team on fundraising campaigns, including direct mail appeals and monthly giving emails.
  • Produce promotional content for community engagement and volunteer events, major fundraising events, and public campaigns before, during, and after each event.
  • Support volunteer-to-donor and visitor-to-donor conversion through follow-up content and conversion-oriented calls to action.


Analytics & Project Management

  • Monitor website, email, and social media performance and prepare regular reports on audience growth, engagement, and campaign results.
  • Manage communications requests, timelines, approvals, and project workflow.
  • Support media monitoring and the media contact database.


Experience & Skills

  • 3+ years of experience in digital communications, marketing, or a related role, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
  • Proficiency with WordPress, Google Analytics, Canva or Adobe Creative Suite, email marketing platforms (Emma or similar), and social media management tools.
  • Experience with Salesforce or a similar CRM a plus; willingness to learn required.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt voice and format for varied audiences.
  • Photo, short-form video, and graphic design skills.
  • Organized, collaborative, and able to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Passion for Heal the Bay's mission and environmental conservation.


Compensation

This is a full-time, exempt position with an annual salary range of $78,000 to $88,000 depending on experience with appropriate state and federal taxes withheld.

Benefits

Comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement contributions, and paid time off. Heal the Bay covers 90 percent of employee medical, dental, and vision insurance premiums. Full-time employees are also eligible for life insurance and participation in the organization's Simple IRA retirement plan. Employees receive paid vacation and Heal the Bay recognized holidays in accordance with organizational policy. In accordance with California labor law, employees are eligible to accrue and use up to 72 hours of paid sick leave per calendar year after completing 30 days of employment.

Schedule

Full-time with an average of 40 hours per week, based on operational and programmatic needs. Heal the Bay operates in a hybrid manner; typical schedule might be (2) days in the office or field per week. Participation in some weekend and evening events, as well as county wide travel.

Location

The employee's primary work location will be at Heal the Bay Headquarters in Santa Monica, with some work at the Heal the Bay Aquarium at the Santa Monica Pier and other event locations throughout Los Angeles County.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work in variable weather conditions with potential exposure to heat, wind, and inclement weather both indoors and outdoors.
