JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Mechanic for the Asphalt and Paving Shop is an advanced journey-level position responsible for the expert maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of a specialized fleet of asphalt paving equipment and heavy-duty diesel trucks. Beyond technical execution, the Senior Mechanic serves as a technical lead, providing mentorship to junior mechanics and ensuring that the paving crew's high-stakes equipment-including pavers, rollers, and milling machines-operates at peak efficiency to minimize downtime during critical paving windows. This role requires a safety-first mindset and the ability to perform complex repairs in both shop and field environments.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Utilize advanced electronic diagnostic software and precision testing equipment to identify malfunctions in engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
  • Diagnose and repair high-pressure hydraulic systems, including pumps, control valves, cylinders, and motors specifically found on asphalt pavers and screed systems.
  • Troubleshoot and rewire complex electrical systems, including sensors, computerized engine controls, and lighting for night-time paving operations.
  • Perform complete teardowns and rebuilds of diesel engines, transmissions, and final drive units.
  • Maintain a diverse fleet including CAT/Volvo pavers, rollers (pneumatic and steel drum), asphalt distributors, skid steers, and milling machines.
  • Perform precision adjustments and repairs to paver screeds, conveyor systems, and augers to ensure consistent material flow and mat quality.
  • Oversee and execute the PM schedule, ensuring all lubrication, oil analysis, and safety inspections are completed.
  • Function as a lead worker, providing training and technical guidance to Maintenance Mechanics and Welders.
  • Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to document work orders, track parts usage, and manage equipment history.
  • Research and order critical components, maintaining a lean inventory of 'high fail' parts to ensure rapid turnaround on repairs.
  • Perform emergency roadside or job-site repairs under tight deadlines.
  • Conduct pre-shift safety inspections and ensure all repairs meet company and federal safety standards.
  • Utilize oxy/acetylene torches and stick/MIG welding equipment to fabricate parts or perform structural repairs on trailers and plant equipment.
  • Lead by example in the 'Guardian Angel' safety culture, identifying and mitigating hazards before they lead to incidents.
  • Able to work from elevated platforms and confined spaces.
  • Able to work outdoors in varied weather conditions or in a shop environment.
  • Able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Actively participate in the hazard recognition program by documenting near-misses and implementing safety improvements.
