Diesel Engine Inspector Lead

Position Summary:
Life Cycle Engineering has a contingent opening for Diesel Engine Inspector (DEI), supporting services for the Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CNSP) Readiness Assistance Training Team (RATT). The Lead Diesel Engine Inspector (DEI) serves as Team Lead for the Amphibious Diesel (LPD/LSD) visit team and as the program's senior inspection specialist for diesel main propulsion systems including the Colt-Pielstick PC2 series installed in LPD-17 and LSD-41/49 class ships. This position also provides diesel expertise support to the MCM/LCS team for MTU 16V 538 (MCM) and diesel generator systems. The Lead DEI carries inspector-level authority and credibility across diesel propulsion, diesel generators, controllable-pitch propeller systems, and associated auxiliary systems, and must be capable of credible engagement with ship CHENGs and ISICs on both technical findings and maintenance program health. This contract has a contingent start of September 2026.

Security Clearance Requirements:

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the Amphibious Diesel (LPD/LSD) visit team through all phases of RATT visit execution.
  • Serve as the senior SME for Colt-Pielstick PC2 diesel propulsion, Wartsila CPP systems, diesel generators, and associated auxiliary systems.
  • Compile the Pre-Visit Intelligence Package for each assigned hull; coordinate pre-visit contact with ship leadership per PWS Task 4.10.
  • Conduct and supervise deck plate training at all levels; administer Level 2 pre/post knowledge assessments and complete Level 3 behavioral observation forms.
  • Generate maintenance-ready Automated Work Requests for all Category I and II material discrepancies; review all SME-generated AWRs before submission.
  • Complete all post-trip deliverables within five working days of trip completion.
  • Provide diesel propulsion SME support to the MCM/LCS team on request.
  • Submit inputs for monthly Class Issues Assessment Report; flag class-level diesel propulsion patterns to the PM.
  • Participate in annual STANCO; lead diesel propulsion curriculum review agenda items.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of supervisory experience in analyses, DEI system operations
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of supervisory-level watchstanding experience on warships or military auxiliaries with diesel engine propulsion systems as EOOW, Propulsion Plant Watch Officer, Chief Engineer, or equivalent.
  • Extensive Navy technical management experience on multiple ships.
  • Extensive experience as EOOW on multiple diesel ships.
  • Minimum two (2) tours as a Navy Diesel Engine Inspector with Navy surface ship maintenance processes.
  • Extensive experience conducting diesel inspections on surface warships or military auxiliaries with qualifications and certification as or equivalent to a U.S. Navy Diesel Engine Inspector.
  • Direct operational and maintenance experience within the last five (5) years with diesel main propulsion, diesel generators, associated control systems, and associated auxiliaries currently in use by the Navy.
  • Undergraduate or associate's degree, or extensive demonstrated experience in a management role.

Preferred Education, Skills and/or Experience:
  • Twenty-five (25) or more years of DEI-qualified inspection experience.
  • Experience on LPD-17 (Colt-Pielstick PC2-5), LSD-41/49, and MCM-1 (MTU 16V 538) diesel propulsion systems.
  • Experience with Wartsila controllable-pitch propeller systems (LPD-17 / LSD-41/49).
  • Prior RATT, ERAT, or TYCOM-directed fleet engagement experience.

Physical Demands and Expectations:
  • Ability to work in an industrial shipboard/shipyard environment, climb shipboard ladders and wear all required safety equipment.
  • Able to lift (up to 50lb), carry, and transport heavy equipment and materials required. Able to meet U.S. Navy shiprider requirements
  • Must be willing to travel up to 40% of the year to CONUS/OCONUS locations.
  • Ability to speak, read, hear and write, with or without assistance
  • Ability to use phone and computer systems, copier, fax, and other office equipment.
