The Donor Communications Officer is an important member of TNC's Africa Development Team, and develops materials to engage, solicit and steward private individual and institutional donors with the capacity to give at a major ($100K+) and principal ($5M+) level.

Additionally, the officer maintains knowledge of The Nature Conservancy's work in Africa along a set of programmatic beats-determined by the Associate Director of Donor Communications and Director of Donor Relations-in support of the messaging needs of the Region and the broader organization.

The Donor Communications Officer contributes to strategic priorities of the Africa Region by collaborating with team members across the United States and Africa. The officer plays a key role in developing and disseminating organizational messaging in collaboration with development, communications, and conservation colleagues. The officer provides advice and guidance on donor communications and stewardship.

The Donor Communications Officer maintains up-to-date, expert knowledge of donor communications tools and practices, applies that knowledge to the organization's fundraising goals, and acts as a resource for colleagues in development, conservation and more. The officer maintains relationships with closely aligned teams in Marketing Communications and Conservation to ensure consistency of messaging and materials and to foster greater collaboration.

This position will be open to candidates across the US, with a preference for those in Eastern time zones for ease of collaboration with colleagues across Africa and Europe. The officer will report to the Africa Associate Director of Donor Communications, who is based in the eastern United States.

The ideal candidate should have strong communications and project management skills, with experience in fundraising for a non-profit organization. What You'll Bring

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

• Write and edit proposals, reports and other materials to assist with private fundraising.
• Manage and implement multiple projects, including setting deadlines and ensuring accountability.
• Coordinate with the donor comms colleagues to implement the Africa Region's strategic fundraising goals.
• Exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems as needed in supervisor's stead.
• Make decisions that may have program-wide impact and affect staff in non-program areas.
• Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
• Take a leadership role as needed in interdepartmental teams to coordinate the work of peers.
• Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures, and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements.
• Lead project teams as assigned for the development and implementation of new initiatives or the improvement of existing programs.
• Manage or participate in complex negotiations as needed.
• Provide oversight for one or more key functions of the team.
• Travel occasionally, work long and flexible hours as needed.
• Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
• Work is diversified and may not always fall under established practices and guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree and 5 years related experience or equivalent combination.
• Experience analyzing and interpreting information.
• Experience managing multiple projects.
• Experience working with cross-functional teams.
• Experience, coursework, or other training in principles and practices of relevant field.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience are appreciated.
• Experience working in partnership with others in a collaborative or advisory role.
• Experience conceiving and writing creatively for a wide variety of audiences.
• Experience developing, managing, and implementing goals, plans, and complex processes.
• Expertise in current and evolving technology related to donor communications.
• Knowledge of current and evolving communications trends, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
• Proficiency in interpreting guidelines and manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting data.
• Successful experience managing and implementing strategic program goals.
• Superior planning and problem-solving skills.
• Familiarity with visual storytelling and/or design best practices.
• Understanding of budget development, financial reporting and/or accounting practices.
