Designer IV

Position Summary:

The Designer IV is a senior-level design professional responsible for leading the development and execution of complex electrical and structural design packages for high-voltage EPC projects, including substations, transmission systems, switchyards, and related power infrastructure. This position serves as a technical leader within the design team, providing mentorship to junior designers, coordinating multidisciplinary design efforts, and ensuring deliverables meet project requirements, industry standards, and client expectations.

The Designer IV works with minimal supervision, collaborates closely with engineers, project managers, construction personnel, and clients, and plays a key role in improving design processes, maintaining quality standards, and supporting successful project execution from concept through construction.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the preparation of complex design packages for high-voltage substations, transmission lines, switchyards, and industrial electrical facilities.
  • Produce and review detailed engineering drawings using AutoCAD and other design software, including:


  • General arrangement drawings
  • Equipment layouts and elevations
  • Foundation plans
  • Grounding layouts
  • Conduit and cable routing
  • Control building layouts
  • Structural steel details
  • Bills of Material (BOMs)
  • Shop and erection drawings


  • Interpret engineering calculations, specifications, contracts, and client requirements to develop accurate construction drawings.
  • Serve as the lead designer on multiple concurrent projects while managing schedules and design priorities.
  • Coordinate design activities with engineering, project management, procurement, fabrication, and construction teams.
  • Review and approve drawings prepared by junior designers for technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company standards.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to Designer I, II, and III personnel.
  • Develop and maintain CAD standards, drafting procedures, templates, and best practices.
  • Perform interdisciplinary coordination to identify and resolve design conflicts before construction.
  • Participate in constructability reviews and value engineering efforts to improve project execution and reduce costs.
  • Manage drawing revisions, document control, and version management throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Perform Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) reviews on design deliverables before client submission.
  • Prepare and coordinate drawing submittals, design packages, and record drawings.
  • Support project meetings, client discussions, and field personnel by providing technical design expertise.
  • Assist with field investigations, site visits, and construction support as required.
  • Recommend improvements to design workflows and continuously enhance drafting efficiency and quality.
  • Maintain organized project documentation in accordance with company procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.


Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Drafting Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline preferred. Equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 8-12 years of CAD design experience, with significant experience supporting high-voltage electrical, utility, EPC, industrial, or power infrastructure projects.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD; experience with Autodesk Vault, Civil 3D, MicroStation, Inventor, Revit, or similar software is a plus.
  • Extensive knowledge of substation layouts, transmission facilities, electrical equipment arrangements, grounding systems, and construction drawing development.
  • Experience with utility, renewable energy, battery energy storage (BESS), or industrial power projects.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Familiarity with document management systems and EPC project execution.
  • Experience supporting field construction activities and resolving design issues during installation.
  • Knowledge of 3D modeling and BIM workflows is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of industry standards, including IEEE, ANSI, NESC, NEC, OSHA, and applicable utility standards.
  • Proven ability to interpret engineering calculations, specifications, vendor drawings, and construction documents.
  • Experience leading design efforts on large, complex EPC projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and experience mentoring junior designers.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet project deadlines.
