This role is responsible for defining welding requirements, including procedure selection, base material compatibility, and nondestructive examination strategies, ensuring designs are code-compliant, manufacturable, and optimized for performance. The Design Weld Engineer plays a critical role in strengthening the organization's engineering rigor and ensuring weld design integrity across nuclear and heavy industrial projects.
Responsibilities - Develop, select, and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) aligned with design intent and applicable codes.
- Own Engineering responsibilities for welding design and criteria, including:
- Selection of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), base metal selection, and selection of NDE methods and examination frequency
- Serve as the technical bridge between engineering and manufacturing, ensuring weld designs are manufacturable, code-compliant, and optimized for performance and cost.
- Collaborate with structural and mechanical engineers to integrate welding requirements into design packages and 3D models (e.g., SolidWorks).
- Review fabrication drawings and models to ensure correct application of weld symbols, joint details, and inspection criteria.
- Lead failure analysis and root cause investigations for weld-related issues and implement design-based corrective actions.
- Provide technical guidance to production, quality, and project teams on welding best practices and constraints.
- Support audits, customer reviews, and technical evaluations as the subject matter expert for welding design.
