The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Connectivity Hardware Design Release Engineer (DRE) to join our team, focused on developing best-in-class automotive Connectivity systems.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in end-to-end ECU hardware development, including sourcing, cost management, and supplier coordination, for wireless Connectivity telematics modules to ensure hardware meets performance, cost, and timing targets throughout the program life cycle.

The Role

The Connectivity Hardware Design Release Engineer will be responsible for the sourcing, and change management of connectivity telematics modules across all GM vehicles and architectures. This includes managing BoM and TierN compliance, ensuring delivery of programspecific ICD/ICDm, DFMEA, CTRS specifications, and leading hardware packaging and integration of the ECU into vehicle platforms.

This role is tightly coupled to cross-functional teams, including vehicle integration, product manager, and system engineering, to create secure and reliable connectivity solutions and assist in defining future technology roadmaps and resolution of issues that arise throughout development and production. This role will also work closely with Global Purchasing & Supply Chain, Contract Manufacturers, and validation teams to ensure production readiness and robust launch performance.

What Youll Do

  • Own sourcing, Engineering Change Requests (ECR), and alignment with Product Cost Engineering activities for Connectivity Hardware solutions.
  • Lead vehicle packaging and integration of the Connectivity Hardware into vehicle platforms, ensuring mechanical, thermal, and EMC constraints are met while maintaining connectivity performance targets.
  • Manage program-specific interface control documents (ICDe/ICDm) and other component level specifications, ensuring alignment with system, software, and vehicle requirements.
  • Maintain the ECU Bill of Material (BoM) and coordinate TierN resiliency activities, including design reviews, timing alignment, risk tracking, and issue resolution.
  • Manage Contract Manufacturer engagement for ECU builds, ensuring correct configuration, build readiness, and timely delivery of hardware for development and production.
  • Execute and complete production approval activities for Connectivity Hardware ensuring all required documentation, test evidence, and regulatory approvals are in place for production release.
  • Develop and maintain the program DFMEA in collaboration with internal teams and suppliers, driving mitigation actions and continuous improvement for field robustness.
  • Coordinate prototype, DV, PV, and launch hardware builds with suppliers and internal teams, ensuring configuration control, issue tracking, and timely resolution of findings.
  • Ensure Connectivity Hardware design documentation meets applicable safety, EMC/EMI, cybersecurity, and regulatory requirements, through working with domain experts.
  • Report to senior leaders on Connectivity Hardware status, supplier readiness, cost and timing risks, and required escalations.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering/technical experience
  • 3+ years of experience in automotive ECU hardware development, including responsibility for BoM, supplier coordination, and production launch.
  • Proven expertise in wireless connectivity technologies (4G/5G, WiFi, BT, BLE, UWB, NFC, GNSS).
  • Experience interpreting hardware validation results and driving suppliers to root cause and correct complex hardware and system issues.
  • Familiarity with automotive-grade components, SoCs, environmental constraints, and compliance to applicable regulations.
  • Experience with DFMEA, PFMEA, ICDe, ICEm, Regulatory requirements and testing, and other reliability engineering practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to work through complex hardware and system issues.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines and with global suppliers.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Masters degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Knowledge and experience in wireless interfaces and technology.
  • Exposure to vehicle integration and validation processes, including working with HIL systems and vehicle test benches.
  • Experience working with global suppliers and managing hardware development across multiple geographies.

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}.
