Full Job Description
Summary: VES is looking for a Design Engineer to join our team in our Kingwood, Texas location. This person will work to Roller Cone Design Engineer to lead design, development, and optimization of roller cone rock bits. This role is responsible for creating designs that improve drilling and financial performance across various drilling applications while bringing value to the company and end user.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Reviews and analyzes customer/operational requirements to determine engineering solution through product or material design.
  • Performs other duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
  • As required, develops conceptual design and new products. Coordinates the manufacturing of prototype products or systems.
  • Monitors the performance of products through analysis of returned products. Provides support and investigates product quality/performance related issues. Troubleshoots, performs root cause analysis, and develops potential solutions. Initiates and follows up on corrective action when required.
  • Provides technical support to sales and operations as required. Assists in the delivery of product technical data packs, reports, technical bulletins, and updates.
  • Maintains the Engineering database and documents designs and their associated information.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, sales, field services, and end user to understand customer value and at times being present at customer sites (Field and Manufacturing).
  • Supports product line by executing engineering solutions. Creates new or modifies existing products to meet internal or external customer requirements. Creates product design intent for fit, form, function, and manufacturability. Prepares required documentation and completes design reviews

Education and/or Experience
  • At least 2-4 four years of related experience in roller cone bit design/applications.
  • Experience in the open pit mining is preferred, but not required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field from an accredited institution and/or 5 to 10 years of direct industry experience.
  • Strong understanding of the design process, from concept to manufacturing release, and required adherence to design standards along with communication of design intent through Bill of Materials (BOM), CAD models, drawings, specifications, and other technical data/documentation.
  • Strong understanding of material concepts, specifically with steel alloys, composite materials, elastomers, and cemented carbides
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes (e.g. machining, turning, forging, casting, and heat treatment)
  • Understanding of theoretical calculations (e.g. tolerance stack, FEA, CFD) as they apply to the design of the product.
