JOB OVERVIEW

We are seeking a Design Engineer Level 3 with project management experience to join our team. This unique position blends engineering expertise with project oversight responsibilities, offering the opportunity to work on diverse infrastructure projects including roads, bridges, railroads, and water systems. We value professionals who enjoy both technical challenges and client-focused project delivery.

This position is full-time will report in-person to the Schaumburg Illinois Department of Transportation office.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee project contracts, schedules, budgets, and compliance, ensuring all engineering activities align with department and industry standards.
  • Manage and coordinate the work of design consultants, including leading meetings, reviewing plans, and maintaining consistent project documentation and communication.
  • Facilitate collaboration with municipalities, stakeholders, and internal/external teams through meetings, presentations, and a centralized project website for sharing information and resolving consultant inquiries.
  • Coordinate all aspects of corridor project delivery, including traffic management, environmental studies, permitting, utility relocations, land acquisition, and geotechnical reporting.
  • Plan and execute engineering design activities for public works facilities, ensuring technical accuracy, code compliance, and effective problem-solving.
  • Provide ongoing project updates and technical advice and perform additional support tasks as needed to ensure successful project outcomes.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of 5 years of related engineering experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering required.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate preferred.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects, track schedules and budgets, and administer contracts.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in selecting methods and techniques for project solutions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & SUPERVISION

You will typically work independently and receive general instructions for new assignments, while day-to-day activities require little supervision. Collaboration and coordination with internal teams, external consultants, and municipal partners are key aspects of the role.
