Position OverviewThomson Power Systems, a Regal Rexnord company, is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team supporting custom-engineered low- and medium-voltage switchgear and automatic transfer switch (ATS) products.
In this role, you will be responsible for the mechanical design and development of electrical power distribution equipment, collaborating closely with Engineering, Sales, Manufacturing, and Purchasing teams. You will support customer-driven projects from concept through production release, while ensuring designs meet technical requirements, quality standards, manufacturability objectives, and project timelines.
Key Responsibilities - Design low- and medium-voltage switchgear and automatic transfer switch products within the Custom Engineered Products team.
- Review customer specifications, drawings, and datasheets to develop mechanical design solutions and identify technical requirements.
- Prepare preliminary mechanical drawings, technical datasheets, and bills of material (BOMs) for customer review and approval.
- Create detailed manufacturing drawings, final BOMs, and engineering documentation for production release.
- Collaborate with Sales, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and other Engineering team members to resolve technical issues and support project execution.
- Design indoor and outdoor sheet metal enclosures, mounting systems, breaker support structures, busbar systems, and related components using 3D CAD software.
- Develop and maintain mechanical designs utilizing Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD.
- Participate in New Product Development (NPD) initiatives, including design activities, technical reviews, and project coordination.
- Support engineering change activities and product enhancements to improve performance, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Ensure compliance with internal engineering processes, standards, and quality requirements.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities related to design, documentation, and engineering workflows.
- Assist with the development of standard test plans and validation procedures for products and components.
- Support cross-functional teams in addressing technical challenges and customer requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or equivalent demonstrated professional experience.
- Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD.
- Experience with 3D modeling and mechanical design.
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings, bills of material, and manufacturing processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Self-motivated with a strong sense of initiative and a continuous improvement mindset.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced engineering environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada without requiring employer-sponsored work authorization.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications - Experience designing switchgear, automatic transfer switches, power distribution equipment, or related electrical products.
- Experience with sheet metal enclosure design and fabrication.
- Previous manufacturing or industrial engineering experience.
- Exposure to New Product Development (NPD) processes and project management.
- Familiarity with electrical busbar systems and structural design for power distribution equipment.
- Experience working in an engineered-to-order manufacturing environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
