The Kansas City District is seeking a Deputy Project Director over Construction to support the construction-phase delivery, administration, and closeout of upcoming Design-Build projects within the Alternative Project Delivery group. These projects range from major corridor improvements to bundled bridge or safety packages and are part of the District's long-term plan to maintain a consistent Design-Build pipeline and strengthen MoDOT's capacity to deliver consecutive design-build projects.

The Deputy Project Director for Construction leads and coordinates all construction-phase activities for Design-Build projects, ensuring contractor compliance with plans, specifications, and contract requirements while maintaining strong communication with inspectors, contractors, subject matter experts, and the public. They develop and manage Quality Oversight Plans, supervise MoDOT and consultant inspection staff, support auditing and materials testing, provide constructability input during design development, and help resolve field issues throughout project execution. The Deputy Project Director also participates in Procurement and Design activities to maintain continuity and strengthen cross-training across project phases, supporting the Project Director and overseeing activities performed by MoDOT's project team and the Owner-Engineer consultant as needed.

This position plays a central role in MoDOT's long-term strategy to build a stable, experienced Design-Build team with the ability to deliver consecutive projects efficiently. The Deputy Project Director is expected to contribute to a culture of innovation, safety, accountability, and collaboration while helping grow future leaders within the district.

Responsibilities - What you'll do

A day in the life:
• Lead construction-phase oversight for Design-Build projects, ensuring contractor adherence to plans, specifications, and all contract requirements.
• Develop, implement, and manage the project Quality Oversight Plan.
• Coordinate and supervise MoDOT and consultant construction inspectors; support auditing and materials testing activities.
• Attend Task Force meetings and provide continual constructability input throughout design development.
• Participate in Procurement and Design activities to build cross-functional knowledge and continuity.
• Maintain frequent communication with contractors, inspectors, subject matter experts, and public stakeholders.
• Manage public-facing communications regarding construction impacts, closures, schedules, and safety messaging.
• Lead job closeout activities including As-Built Plan Review, Final Plans Checklist, Warranty Period Reviews, and transfer of responsibilities to MoDOT Maintenance.
• Document decisions, risks, field issues, and key construction actions clearly and accurately.
• Support continuous improvement of construction-phase processes, auditing practices, and contract language development.

The best candidate for the position will be selected based on the minimum requirements and the desired qualities listed above.

According to the project needs, the Project Team, led by the Project Director, may increase incrementally beyond the initial Project Team.
