ABOUT THE POSITION

The Marin County Probation Department is seeking multiple (currently up to five) entry and/or journey level Deputy Probation Officers (DPOs) to join our Adult and/or Juvenile Divisions. These positions are full-time, regular hire and will be filled at any of the following levels: Deputy Probation Officer I, Deputy Probation Officer I Bilingual (English/Spanish), Deputy Probation Officer II, and/or Deputy Probation Officer II Bilingual (English/Spanish). The successful candidates (DPOs) will be assigned to a Division based upon the Department operational needs. The eligible lists created from this recruitment will also be used to fill any future vacancies for open, fixed-term, full-time or part-time positions which may occur while the lists remain active. This list may also be used to fill contingent (temporary) essential services positions.
NOTE: Candidates will be considered for the level for which they meet minimum qualifications.

Deputy Probation Officer I is the entry level in the series. Incumbents learn the techniques of investigation, case management, and/or program work while becoming familiar with all aspects of the Probation Department. Incumbents at the DPO I level may advance to the higher-level classification after gaining the required experience and completing the California state requirements of POST PC 832 and STC Deputy Probation Officer Core training courses which must be completed prior to the end of the probationary period.
Deputy Probation Officer II is the journey to advanced journey level and requires experience as an officer in a California County Probation Department, State or Federal Probation Department or Probation organization in another state. Deputy Probation Officer II placement requires prior field training, court investigations knowledge or experience in a Juvenile Hall that has provided exposure to youth case planning, programming and court procedures.

Bilingual classifications are distinguished by the required proficiency in the English language and a designated second language, in this case, Spanish. Proficiency requires the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form, sufficient to convey information and instructions to the public and other employees.

BILINGUAL CERTIFICATION: Successful candidates must demonstrate proficiency in Spanish/ English. A bilingual proficiency exam will be administered to ensure the candidate possesses the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements of the position.

KNOWLEDGE OF

The Minimum Qualifications and Requirements are:
Deputy Probation Officer I and Deputy Probation Officer I Bilingual
  • Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Achieve a passing score on the BSCC's written examination, or an alternative examination as approved under Title 15 CCR, Section 132 prior to appointment.
Additional Requirement for Bilingual: Requires proficiency in the English language as well as a designated second language, in this case, Spanish

Deputy Probation Officer II and Deputy Probation Officer II Bilingual
One year of professional experience performing work equivalent to Marin County's Deputy Probation Officer I, and successful completion of California's Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) in laws of arrest as mandated in Section 832 of the California Penal Code and Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) Probation Officer Core training as mandated by the California Board of State and Community Corrections.

Additional Requirement for Bilingual: Requires proficiency in the English language as well as a designated second language, in this case, Spanish

Certificates & Licenses (all classifications):
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's license is required and must be maintained while employed in the classification.
  • Willingness and ability to obtain certificates in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), prior to completion of the first year of employment.
Special Requirements:
State law requires that all applicants must:
