Position Summary

Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) School of Public Health-Bloomington (SPH-B) invites applications for the position of Department Chair and Tenured Professor in the Department of Kinesiology. The SPH-B seeks an accomplished academic leader who will provide leadership, vision, and strategic and practical direction for the Department of Kinesiology to advance excellence in research, teaching, and service related to exercise, physical activity, and all aspects of human movement and performance, broadly defined.

This 12-month appointment would ideally start July 1, 2027, although an earlier or later start date is negotiable. This position is located on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University. Successful candidates are expected to work on campus to allow full engagement with the department, school, university, and community. Indiana University bases tenure and promotion recommendations upon performance in research, teaching, and service.

A successful candidate will foster the continued development and success of the department's faculty and staff, academic programs and students, research enterprise, and outreach programs while strengthening interdisciplinary collaborations and leveraging opportunities to advance knowledge and its application to health and well-being. This position represents a unique opportunity to lead a department with 75+ years of outstanding legacy yet one that is also uniquely well-positioned for excellence within a school of public health, especially with our recently acquired new leadership.

Responsibilities: The Department Chair provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the department and is responsible for advancing excellence across its academic, research, and service missions. The Chair also provides general administration and oversight of departmental operations; promotes the recruitment, development, success, and retention of faculty and staff; supports student academic and professional success; and provides leadership for the development, delivery, assessment, and continuous improvement of academic programs and curricula. The Chair fosters a strong research environment, supports faculty scholarship and the pursuit of external funding, and facilitates interdisciplinary and collaborative research within the SPH-B, across IUB and IU more broadly, and with external partners. The Chair is responsible for effective stewardship of the department's budget, resources, and funding priorities and works to identify opportunities that support the department's strategic goals and continued growth. The Chair promotes effective, transparent, and timely communication within the department and serves as an advocate and representative for the department to the school, university, profession, and broader community. Beyond administrative responsibilities, the Chair is expected to maintain an active research program with scholarship, contribute to teaching/mentoring, and provide service aligned with an appointment as Professor.

About Kinesiology: As a legacy program on the IUB campus, the Department of Kinesiology, with 30 full-time faculty, has a strong and growing enrollment in the undergraduate Exercise Science degree program (~1,375 students), and healthy enrollments in graduate degree programs (~75 students) including an MS in Athletic Training, MS in Kinesiology, and a PhD in Human Performance. Faculty conduct research across numerous areas including exercise physiology (with historical excellence in environmental and clinical exercise physiology), biomechanics, neuromuscular/motor control, physical activity and fitness interventions, athletic training, and sport-based approaches to health and well-being. Kinesiology faculty are active contributors to the SPH-B Nutrition and Exercise Research Center and collaborate with the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences and the related Imaging Research Facility. An emerging exemplar of community engagement, Hoosier Sport, a growing research and experiential learning outreach program that serves surrounding communities, uses sport to promote physical activity, health, leadership, and positive youth development. Finally, the department supports the Physical Activity Instruction Program, an extensive fitness and sport focused academic service program.

Basic Qualifications

Qualifications: Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in kinesiology, exercise/movement science, or a closely related field from an accredited institution and possess a record of scholarly achievement, teaching, and service appropriate for appointment as a senior faculty member at IUB. Candidates must possess a distinguished record of research and scholarship, including success in securing extramural funding and experience leading significant research initiatives. Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and/or graduate level is required with curriculum experience preferred. Candidates must possess leadership experience and evidence of the ability to build consensus and articulate, build and advance a compelling vision for the department; effectively administer academic programs, personnel, and resources including budgets; support the professional development and success of faculty and staff; promote student academic and professional success; and foster excellence and innovation across the tri-partite mission of teaching, research and service. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and build productive relationships is essential. Finally, and importantly, the successful candidate must be able to foster a positive work culture and coalesce the department toward future excellence.
